As a small business owner, I love to support other small shops. When shopping online, there are so many fantastic stores to shop from, whether they’re on Instagram, Etsy or their own site they’re just waiting to be discovered. You can guarantee that when small business shops make a sale, there is someone sat behind the laptop, seeing the order email pop up, squealing with excitement.
Some of you may know that I sell my own prints from the Powder Rooms Shop, which has it’s own Etsy store. I love being able to provide something meaningful and luxury for less. I pride my prints of being empowering, and offering a unique gift.
With this in mind, I decided during the crazy times we’re currently all going through, it would be great to share 3 reasons why you should consider shopping small in 2020.
They’re made with love
I know when it comes to my items, I craft all of my prints with love and I know lots of small businesses do the same. Whether you’re buying a one-off piece of art, a gift or something else, you know that it’ll be high quality and the love is behind it.
The personal making the item or ordering it in for their shop will have carefully selected it, so you know there’s a though process behind the item.
I know with making my own prints when designing them, I want everything to be perfect as it reflects my brand and creates a good image. I like being able to offer something that relates to people, offers support, or just something nice and pretty for shoppers to receive.
In times of change, we are all looking to use less plastic, myself included. With plenty of choices on the market which don’t involve plastic, I am happy to use alternatives such as cardboard packaging and mailers.
This is also greatly appreciated when retailers and other businesses do the same. It is easy to purchase and actually a lot more on budget than most people think. Lil Packaging are one of my go to’s when it comes to sourcing plastic-free packaging for less.
You’ll also find when shopping at indie brands or over at online sellers shops, some will focus purely on being sustainable, as it’s much easier to do this when they aren’t making things in such large size masses.
It gives support
In these times especially, it’s super important to stand together. Supporting a small business can really help out the person behind the brand. If you’re looking for a gift for a friend or just a treat for yourself, heading on to Etsy, eBay or even Instagram is a great place to start. You know there is a person behind the brand that has built it from scratch, and really cares about quality and their name is behind it.
If you’re looking for a specific type of product, it’s always a great idea to ask for recommendations on social media as it allows for businesses you may not have known about to come forward. Or why not reach out to micro influencers and ask them what their fave small businesses are? I’d assume they have a list as long as their arm!
I hope you’ve enjoyed this post, and if you’re looking for thoughtful, empowering gifts for friends or family, I have plenty of new prints over at my Powder Rooms shop!
