The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted many businesses, but the beauty sector has been particularly devastated.
The lockdowns affect the hair stylists but also their clients, too. Many people across the UK are upset because of the inability to get their hair cut professionally – especially women with roots or long, over grown hair!
People want to get back to their normal lives, go back to work, visit the office, spend time with friends, and of course, have a good quality haircut. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 reality is the new normal, and all we can do is accept this. However, that doesn’t mean that you have to live with uncut hair.
While you can’t visit your favourite hair salon, there are other ways like using the best flat iron for natural hair to take care of your hair during the COVID-19 pandemic.. You can use one of the two most common options – cutting your hair yourself or looking for more creative solutions. Want to learn more about them? Read on!
Cut Your Hair Yourself
The pandemic has made us deal with many things by ourselves – and it’s an opportunity to learn a lot. Cooking, homeschooling our children, and, of course, cutting your own hair doesn’t have to be so challenging anymore. You just need some tips and proper tools.
If you’ve decided to cut your hair at home, make sure to prepare. Watch tutorials to learn proper haircutting techniques. Choose the ones appropriate for your hair type and length. Get a mirror, or even two, to stay in control at all times. And of course, get suitable scissors.
Never cut your hair with the scissors you have at home. They don’t allow for precise cuts and will most probably ruin your hair. Instead, you should look for proper haircutting tools online – for example “Scissor Tech UK – hairdresser scissors” and order shears according to your preferences and budget. This way, you’re getting the scissors you need without having to leave the house. If you’re a lefty, you can always look for a specialized pair of left handed hair scissors, which should make the job easier for you

Some tips for cutting your hair at home:
- Always cut a little less than you should – this way, you will avoid possible mistakes. Remember, it’s possible to cut a little more after you finish, but it’s not possible to grow your hair out in a short time.
- If you don’t have bangs but want to cut for them, the best advice is don’t. Bangs are incredibly tricky to get right. However, if you decide to cut for bangs anyway, try curtains bangs. They’re less challenging than blunt ones. Be extremely careful when cutting, though.
- To get the best result, cut wavy and curly hair when it’s dry, and straight hair when it’s wet.
- If you have a blunt bob and want to trim it, flat iron the hair for more precise cuts.
- Try point cutting – cut into the hair vertically. This way, you won’t snip a lot. And if you don’t have a steady hand, the mistakes will be inconspicuous.
Get Creative
If you’re not so sure about cutting hair yourself, don’t go into it. The pandemic will be over one day, and you can see your hairstylist right after the lockdown is lifted. This will also be one of the best ways to support the hairdressing industry, which lost almost half its revenue in 2020.
Of course, that probably won’t happen as quickly as we all want. Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to keep your head in good shape.
Firstly, you can ask a friend or family member to trim your hair (with professional shears or a razor comb). Just make sure they know what they’re doing, and keep yourselves safe. And then, when you visit your hairstylist, they’ll sort out any potential flaws.
The second option is to get creative. Experiment with different hairstyles that don’t require cutting. Did you know that you can make a faux bob or faux fringe, and it will look amazing? Google it.
Accessorise up
Wear a hat or a scarf! Fedora hats, beanie hats and caps are hugely in fashion at the moment. Or, you can go down the route of headbands or pretty scarves. Shop online or look for new scarf-tying techniques. Use brooches or earrings to add some contrast. Or colour your hair at home to try something different. You can get a home kit in your local store or online. There’s lots you can do, you just have to think about what may work best for you and your hair.
You can even try quiffing the front of your hair, or learning the art of the messy bun! This takes attention away from any dark roots coming through too…

A Final Note
While the UK is on its second lockdown, the hair and beauty industry is currently in despair. But even though you can’t see your hairstylist, you can still have a haircut. Do it yourself or ask a family member for help. (Just make sure to use proper tools.) You can also experiment
with different styles and accessories that don’t require cutting but will still make your hair look amazing.
What you shouldn’t do is go to a hairdresser who’s working illegally. It may seem like a good option – you’re getting a haircut and supporting the industry. However, in reality, you’re risking your and many other people’s health. Getting a haircut is not worth it. Don’t be afraid to experiment with your hair at home. But stay at home – and stay safe.
