Food: The Fox Bar and Bistro Ripponden

Over the weekend, I visited the Fox Bar and Bistro in Ripponden for what I can only describe as Afternoon Tea with a complete difference! Forget the finger sandwiches and pots of English Breakfast tea. This unique version arrives on a little bench set up, filled with a range of savoury snacks and cakes, with a funky glass bottle of Appletizer and pretty little straws and little buckets and pots of food.

Five of us headed there on a Saturday afternoon for a 1.30 pm sitting, celebrating a mini baby shower for my twin sister. She didn’t actually want a baby shower, but more of a ‘last lunch out with the girls before I pop’ style lunch. So we set up a lovely little hamper of baby boy treats at the end of the table, along with a baby boy balloon and table decorations, ordering 5 of the afternoon tea’s to tuck into!

The picnic bench afternoon tea changes its theme and food per season, so they currently offer the Autumn Picnic Bench Afternoon Tea.  Priced at £22.95 per person to include Prosecco or £19.95 with Tea/coffee, this particular version is available from October 11h till November 29th, served 12 – 6pm every day.

So here’s the ultimate list of what you get on the ‘bench’!

  • Homemade Mini Cornish Pasty Mini Cup of Homemade Roasted Red Pepper Soup
  • Chargrilled Local Farm Sausage Sandwich
  • A Mini Bucket of Mascarpone Garlic Button Mushrooms
  • The Fox Mini Fish and Chips

Sweet Delights

  • Homemade Pecan and Raisin Flapjack
  • Mini Gingerbread Man
  • Sticky Ginger Parkin Square with Treacle Toffee Wedge
  • Mini Scone with Fresh Chantilly Cream and Strawberry Jam
  • Mini Bottle of Appletize
  • Mini Satsuma
  • Warm Toffee Apple Crumble Slice

Overall, I’d rate this unique spin on Afternoon Tea as absolutely brilliant! The pumpkin soup and fish and chips were the most enjoyable part of the savoury selection, although the button mushrooms and cornish pasty was certainly an unexpected treat. I have to say one of the best parts of Afternoon Tea for me is the treat of the jam and cream scone to separate the savoury and the cakes, so when I saw on the bench that there was a huge one just sitting there waiting to be eaten, I was so happy and overwhelmed!

However, I do have to express that the cake selection was by far the most impressive of the entire lunch. The Sticky Ginger Parkin Square with Treacle Toffee Wedge was literally the most mouth watering cake I’ve eaten – so soft, moist and flavoursome.

Can’t praise this food offering enough! If I could make some amends, I’d swap out the hot dog as I wasn’t too impressed with that, and I would perhaps brings the element of unlimited tea and coffee into the mix too as I did have to keep asking for more drinks, but that aside, what a great lunch!

I’d strongly recommend visiting this place if you have an occasion coming up with the girls. Website c an be found here.
