How to Improve Your Garden and Potentially Add Value to Your Property

Most of us like to look after our homes. We do so because we want somewhere comfortable and pleasant to live. Plus, we know that when it is time for us to move a well-kept, modern property will be worth more and will sell faster.

It is common knowledge that a new kitchen or bathroom can add value to a property. But, did you know that a nice garden can also make a big difference to how much your house is worth?

Well, surprisingly it can. This is largely down to the fact that British homeowners are spending more time in their gardens. The outdoor room concept has really taken off, in the UK. As a result, many potential buyers are just as excited about a well-appointed garden as they are by a gleaming modern kitchen.

Fortunately, it is not too hard to quickly upgrade your garden. Here are a few suggestions.

Plant some trees

In general, people like trees. As a result, the right type of mature tree or a couple of fruit trees have the potential to add quite a bit of value to your property. The fact that you can now buy them online from somewhere like The Tree Center makes it is easy to select one that will be ideal for your garden.

Create a patio

The thing people like to do the most in their garden is to eat or enjoy a drink. So, laying a patio or a dedicated decking area is always worth doing.

Look around your garden and locate the best spot. Bear in mind which area of your garden attracts the sun, and at what time. If you enjoy sitting outside catching the rays during the afternoon into the early evening for sunset, it may be a completely different spot than what attracts the sun in the morning.

If you locate the place and spy trees in the way that perhaps are dying or in a bad condition, consider a tree removal service like – it’s a job best left to the professionals!

Put up a shed

In a recent survey, when estate agents were asked what buyers looked for the most in a garden. A surprising number, 82%, said a decent sized shed. So, having one installed in your garden makes sense.

Improve the privacy

Most people do not like to be overlooked while they are in their gardens. That is why it is worth investing in fencing or hedging.

Create a low maintenance garden

Most people do not have much spare time, so they do not want to buy a house that looks like it is going to be high maintenance. This means that it is a good idea to choose plants and trees that do not require too much work to keep.

It is relatively easy to buy shrubs that rarely need pruning. You can even buy no-prune fruit trees. Your local garden centre will be able to help you to work out which varieties need the least work.

If you have the budget, you could consider putting in fake grass. The only problem is that not everyone likes it and it is still fairly expensive. Potentially you can reduce the amount of grass there is to cut by installing a bigger patio or laying a wide gravel path.

Outdoor lighting

Lighting makes it easier for you to get more out of your garden. So, make sure that you put up some form of lighting in the patio area.

It is also worth lighting up some of the bigger plants in your garden. Doing this will show them off and help to create a more restful ambience, after the sun has gone down.
