Beauty: How To Style a Volume Ponytail with Clip-in Hair Extensions

Not sure how to give your ponytail the volume boost that it needs? I’ve put together a tutorial around how to style you hair and hair extensions into a full, thick ponytail up-do which creates a gorgeous, volumised ponytail.

I feel like there is a universal problem across both women and men at the moment, where everyone is wanting fuller, thicker hair, and lack of density seems to be becoming more common. Yep, even men are stressing about hair a lot these days (I’ve been told that HairBro is a good site for them to check out, FYI!)

So – the voluminous ponytail. All you will need to style up a ponytail with hair extensions is one main hair weft or hair extensions, two smaller side pieces, sectioning clips (if needed), a hair bobble and a brush!

In the step-by-step guide below, I have have used a Premiun 20″ One Piece Clip In Curly Hair Extension in shade Caramel Blonde. The reason behind this is that curly hair extensions are bigger, bouncier and more voluminous than the straight styles, guaranteeing that huge, big hair.

Step One:

Firstly, you’ll need to use a wand to wave your hair first, so that the wavy hair extensions blend into your natural hair. Using a wand, wrap hair sections around 1-2 inches thick around a barrel, hold for 10 seconds, and let go. Continue until your whole head has been ‘waned’ and you are left with a head of beach styled waves.

Step Two:

Brush through the waves so that they fall big and bouncy and soft. Then, clip the top section of your hair to the top of your head, and secure your clip-in hair extensions to the scalp. Make sure they are applied securely by either twisting the sections of hair first and directly clipping the clip into the twist, or gently backcombing the section of hair and inserting the clip into the rough textured backcombed hair.

Step Three:

Once the hair is waved and the extensions are applied, brush through from root to tip so that the hair all blends together and looks natural. Then, move your hair over your preferred shoulder, as the look created in the video works around a side ponytail – so choose your best side!

Step Four:

Gather all the hair at the nape of the neck, and tie with a hair band slightly to the side of your head, keeping it low.

Take small pieces of waves from the front and loosely pull them from the hair band, so they free fall softly around the front of the face.

This style of ponytail pairs both a polished and sleek look with a voluminous feminine style, showing a full, thick ponytail style. Who said up-do’s had to be preened and polished?

The brushed back hair is contrasted with the beautiful soft waves, and it’s super easy to do. In the video tutorial, Emma has curled all of the hair in the same direction to create uniformed waves, but you can experiment with crazy curls or even softer beachy waves for a more carefree vibe if you like – a look great for holidays!
