6 Construction Site Hazards: Do You Know How to Keep Them Under Control?

As anyone who has ever worked on a construction site can testify, such sites are where many accidents can happen. This is largely since there is so much machinery, heights, and other environmental issues that come into play.

Working at Heights

The best way to prevent these falls is to provide adequate and appropriate training for all employees who work at height. This includes employees who utilize various equipment and surfaces, such as working safely on ladders, scaffolding, and roofs.

Slips, Trips, and Falls

Slips, Trips, and falls can happen almost anywhere, but on a construction site, with uneven terrain, various completion stages, and unused materials, they are especially troublesome.

Each year, thousands of construction workers are injured due to a slip or a trip. These could have been avoided by more effectively observing work areas and access routes, such as footpaths and stairwells.

Those who control a construction site should be constantly aware of conditions on the site to ensure that workers can move around it safely. Risks should not only be reported but dealt with promptly.

Moving Objects

Any construction site is in a perpetual state of motion. As a result, the number of hazards increases and evolves as construction progresses. Many objects are moving at any one time. These include supply vehicles, diggers, overhead lifting equipment, and even lightweight formwork. These are not only moving at any given time but on uneven terrain to boot.

There are many ideas to help prevent injuries from these sorts of problems, including avoiding working close to anything moving, watching your surroundings, and wearing personal protective equipment.


Construction sites can be very noisy places. As a result, injuries caused by noise are very common. Excessive voice-;precisely the type found on a construction site-;can cause long term hearing problems and even deafness. Besides these problems, noise can cause dangerous distractions that could steal a worker’s attention, leading to more serious injuries.

Supervisors should always make sure that all their workers are wearing the appropriate hearing safety equipment whenever they are in the vicinity of noise.

Hand/Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS)

The prolonged use of power tools can cause hand/arm vibration syndrome, a common injury on construction sites. HAVS is painful and debilitating, but it is also preventable.

Workers in construction should receive adequate training to help them prevent HAVS. Further, tools, especially those that vibrate, should be well maintained.

Manual and Material Handling

A construction site is where materials are continually being moved, lifted, and handled, either manually or by equipment. Regardless of the circumstances, handling involves a certain degree of risk.

Whenever there is a possibility of injuries due to handling, adequate training should be given to ensure that materials are handled correctly and safely. Supervisors should make sure that employees work safely.

All employees and supervisors must make sure that safety equipment is used, and procedures are followed. Having these is not enough.
