A well-dressed streetwear fit is always uncomplicated. If you prefer a low-maintenance wardrobe, add one statement piece with some “blank” parts that don’t need much styling: an oversized hoodie, a pair of relaxed-fit pants, fresh white kicks, and voilà: nearly a whole fit. Many successful HMDD streetwear fits are oversized, minimal, and punchy without needing to do anything too tricky. You don’t want five statement pieces competing for space, and fit matters more than logos in this situation.
Read the product description carefully when you shop online and don’t assume a garment is the same size as a similar garment from a different label, as I have discovered to my peril. The size you know may not fit the same way in every brand, and streetwear tends toward looser fits. As a general guideline, a good place to begin is one loose top, one simple shoe, or a pair of loose or straight-fitting pants.
Layer a hoodie under a light jacket
Layers add shape to non-louder pieces. Start with a hoodie and wear it under a basic jacket that offers lots of extra space in the shoulders and through the sleeves. When to skip – If you wear a thick hoodie under a tight jacket, the jacket is going to be very close to the t-shirt and is, therefore, going to make the top a bit tight. Choose a hoodie with more room and a better fit so that both the outer layers can sit better. Differentiate the Outerwear- wear the same color hoodie and jackets to be able to distinguish one outerwear from the other. Length: The hemline will make the outfit. If both pieces finish at or approximately at the same time, it can be tight. Alternatively, add a few inches of difference and make the outfit a little more laid back.
Thickness: The overall feel is more of a factor in what weight of the two is used. An extra heavy hoodie under a thick winter jacket can get pretty hot if you’re wearing it all day. It also limits how much space there is and is more challenging to shift easily. When a new season arrives, select a lighter-weight outer jacket. I have made that selection previously and also considered a good colour combo before viewing how much space my body needed in between layers. Compare jacket measurements with the hoodie before purchasing. And for this, you will also make sure not to pay for a look that remains tight. Finish with basic trousers and basic tennis shoes, as the goal is to get everyone a little less conscious of the layers.
The oversized hoodie and straight-leg pants
One Hoodie Can Change the Entire Mood. Just put on an oversized hoodie, your comfort-fit trousers, and a pair of drawstring shorts! This is an effortless vibe that is suitable for a casual day, from brunch to a night out on the town. 4 I’ve gone with trousers that are fairly clean along the whole leg; you want enough room underneath to balance the oversized hoodie but not so much that the trousers bunch at your shoes. Shoes should be kept simple and low-profile; typically, a pair of simple sneakers is fine, but chunky shoes work as well depending on the width of the trousers. Watch the length of the hoodie as well. If it hangs well below your waistband, looser pants may make the whole look a little shapeless. Some structure underneath is helpful. The SKYLRK helps out here because oversized styling doesn’t necessarily mean going two sizes up. Some hoodies have more room built in through the chest and sleeves to start with, so sizing up another size can make them extra baggy. What you want to look at instead are the measurements for chest width, body length, and sleeve length in tandem.
One of these measurements alone may not paint the full picture, especially if you’re choosing between your regular fit and an oversized style. For a more streamlined look, always start with your regular size first, then go from there based on the measurements and the fit that you want to achieve, rather than the model’s body type.
Five easy HMDD Clothing to Try
These combinations preserve usable styling. You can interchange your shoes or color and not take out the entire kit.
- Sweatpants and straight pants: Complete a basic look with a top and traditional white shoes.
- Graphic top and relaxed denim: Play with the denim shades with loose denim items to complement the printed top.
- Sweatshirt & wide-leg trousers: Choosing a clean sweatshirt helps add a bit of contrast to the wide trousers but shouldn’t make them feel “dressy”.
- Monochrome hoodie set: Choose the same color for your top and bottom, and then use shoes as your cute contrast.
- Jacket and hoodie layered: When wearing a jacket over your hoodie, make sure you leave a lot of room in your jacket so it doesn’t lift around your shoulders.
- Big top and bottom: Play around with proportion, but with the legs open (perfect in summer).
Start with one kit. Don’t buy it all at once before you discover what will actually fit into your wardrobe. One handy tip is to take a picture of the outfit on you before you leave the house; this is useful when trying out slightly bigger trousers with a slouchy top. Photos seem to make body proportions more noticeable than a mirror.
How do HMDD outfits depend on proportion?
Fit determines what sexwear feels like. You can wear upmarket items and still lack the streetwear touch if the shapes of your top and bottom don’t complement each other. Take a roomy hoodie, for instance: It can be well suited to slouchy trousers (not necessarily super-baggy ones, but ones that don’t turn your lower half into a pinstripe). Alternatively, a slimmer sweat can sit alongside more voluminous trousers, providing some contrast and not leaving the middle of your body looking like it’s been neutered. Trousers, shoes and proportion: Shoes, for example, can be even more influential with proportion. Wearing a narrow sneaker with wide trousers can sometimes make it look mini-sized on you, whilst putting a chunkier sneaker under a wider hem can still be very wedgie friendly! Now, all that said, first see the pieces you’re considering from the Peace In War outfits collection alone. The photos you see on the models can convey styling better, but may not be the right proportion to your height and build. I’d love to be able to see the model’s height and wearing size, but I find it very helpful. That’s a good perspective, but it doesn’t replace measurements. Oh, and one piece of advice I don’t go along with: making the entire outfit oversized doesn’t always make it more fashionable. Too much volume is going to hide the shape you want to achieve. Try it by changing only one thing at a time. If the hoodie is very generous, keep the trousers not too wide. If the width of the pants is off the mark, go for a top with less volume.
Getting the fit right before ordering
Numbers matter more than guesswork. When shopping online, the most valuable data points are usually the width of the chest, the length of the body, the width of the shoulders, the waist, and inseam (if any). A tag can’t tell you how long the body or sleeves will be if you’re in between sizes; first decide what fit you want. Go down for a more tailored fit, or up if you want some extra room. Also be mindful of sleeve length. Oversized hoodies with long sleeves still look good, but if those sleeves end up covering most of your hands, it’ll start to get old – fast. Another detail you don’t want to overlook: shoulder position. Dropped shoulders might make a hoodie look wider despite there not being many inches of difference in the chest measurement, so look at the whole piece, not one number. I once overlooked this flaw because I was so focused on the width of the chest; I didn’t realize it had been throwing off the way the hoodie hung with my pants. Sizing recommendations have their limits, though. Your fit preference may depend on your height, proportions, or the way you like to layer.
Fabric feel and care can change the look
A cotton-blend fabric will be super-soft for everyday wear, though wash care varies from piece to piece, so don’t treat all cotton like a basic gym shirt. Be sure to read the wash label on the Skylrk Hoodie before you throw the sweatshirt in the wash for the first time, especially if the label says to wash cold and hang to dry. A nylon blend can also have a slight tendency to shrink. Even a garment intended for casual wear can go through several rounds of high heat and experience some shrinkage. The texture too. A smooth outer look in contrast with something brushed or fleeced inside can look different under a jacket. For just casual wear, I typically prefer cloth that doesn’t need to be fussed over. If you are pulling your hem or sleeves every 3 to 4 minutes, then the size or fit is probably not right. Or you’re not wearing the piece enough. A best practice is to wash new dark clothes separately at first, if the care label allows for it. Transfer of dyes can be real pain, especially if you have walking shoes or trousers nearby.
Making HMDD streetwear feel like your style
Create a personal style. Over time, you’ll always have preferences in the fit. Try on different fits, and after a while you’ll know which ones go without adjustment, and which are more of a hassle. Start using HMDD streetwear as inspiration rather than the only story. Comfort should play a role. If the fit is looking great but feels too constricted in the shoulders, you probably don’t want to use it on a normal day either. Your colour palette can be a signal: perhaps black and grey suit you best, or do you want to stick to cream, brown and washed-out blue? Don’t replicate the entire product photo. Casual looks are often made up of more clothes, in a different order, than you currently have in your closet. A good test is to wear the whole outfit for a normal afternoon at home. Have a seat, walk around a bit, and try out the pockets with your hands. Will the sleeves stay in place?
