Trend: Wide-Leg Trousers

Wide-leg trousers aren’t for everyone. Take me for example, I’m a 5ft4 small-framed girl and to be honest anything with a flare or a slouch is usually a definite no-no. I try to avoid any kind of look that swamps me.

But I’ve recently become intrigued about trying to pull off the wide-leg look. They are tipped to be everywhere in 2011, replacing the ‘skinnies’ that have proved to be so popular over the last few years. However, wide-leg trousers are being designed in luxury fabrics, with smart tailoring and high waists to make them appear a more elegant garment to be paired with the daytime shirt.

When it comes to jeans, the 2011 twist on the wide-leg look is to abolish any wide-leg jeans that taper out from the thigh. It’s all about having a fitted upper leg leading into a wide, lose fitting flare as the jean tapers down.

Here’s a little style tip for wearing your wide-legs the right way: always wear heels. Flats can simply not be passed off with this look. Never ever (unless you would like to go for a bottom heavy appearance…)

Also, try to wear your wide-leg style trousers with a fitted blouse or jersey top. This will balance out the look. A baggy jumper paired with wide bottoms is a fashion faux-pas, if that even needs spelling out!

This look can be made very 70’s glamour if paired with a large floppy hat and giant platforms, or opt for a softer 40’s feel with nautical inspired tops and espadrilles.

Maybe its time I ditched my trusty skinnies and gave this look a go!
