Things You Can Do To Get You Through The Lockdown

This time last year, nobody could have predicted we’d be in a situation like we’re in now. A lockdown might not be what anyone wanted in the run-up to Christmas, but for the sake of our health, it’s just something that needs to be done.

While a month-long lockdown can feel like a long time not to be able to see friends and family or go out for food or shopping, it does actually give you some time to do more of the things you wouldn’t normally have time for. You could even try new things for the first time!

Find inspiration for things to do to get you through the lockdown with some of the ideas below.

Get started on some Christmas crafts

Some DIY Christmas crafts can be the perfect way to add a personal and unique touch to your Christmas decor. There are all kinds of things you can make, including your own Christmas baubles, wreaths and garlands – even gifts! Arm yourself with some craft supplies or order what you need online. It’s a great excuse to spend some time doing something creative, so you’ll have plenty to do to keep you occupied! 

Make sure you get outdoors

Some outdoor exercise is beneficial for a number of reasons, but during lockdown – it’s good to get out of the house. Going for a hike (responsibly, of course), a walk around the block or even doing a bit of exercise in your garden can be a good way to get some fresh air and break up the day a bit. Just make sure you wrap up warm – it’s chilly out there!

Watch alternative sports (and maybe discover something you enjoy?)

If being stuck in the house usually leads to a weekend of sport on the TV, why not try watching different sports? You could watch some NFL and check out Chiefs vs Ravens, or even watch something like boxing, horse trials or hockey! There’s a lot of great sport out there besides football and rugby, so why not try something different – you never know what you might enjoy!

Cook up a storm in the kitchen

Eating out is off the menu for now, and while you can still enjoy your favourite takeaway, you could enjoy some great home-cooked meals instead! Why not have a themed night and make your own Chinese, Mexican or Italian cuisine? You never know what tasty new meals you might learn how to make! There are always classics like having a cheese night or some nibbles for those nights you want to treat yourself. When the evenings are dark quickly and it’s colder outside, it’s nice to enjoy some comfort food from time to time!

Work through your DIY list

If you’ve got a list of household jobs you’ve been putting off for weeks or even months, lockdown is your perfect opportunity to work your way through it. From painting to putting up picture frames and even more hands-on jobs like wall panelling, you’ve got a lot of time at home to get it done. Just remember to put safety first – you don’t want to end up in A&E right now!

Enjoy having a breather

While lockdown has put a temporary stop on many of the things you do day to day, there is one thing it has given you – the chance to breathe! Busy work, family and social lives mean many of us forget what it’s like to relax, leading to tiredness, stress and more. It’s nice to be able to take some time to yourself when you don’t have to do anything or be anywhere, so make the most of the opportunity. Some of the ways you can enjoy some quiet time include:

  • Pampering yourself with some at-home beauty treatments
  • Take lots of nice long baths. With a bath tray full of goodies, you’ll never want to leave.
  • Discover a new boxset or get ready for the return of an old favourite (The Crown season 4 comes to Netflix in November!)
  • Enjoy getting cosy and reading a book
  • Sleep in or have some afternoon naps.

Everyone will handle lockdown differently, but it’s important to keep yourself busy if it’s starting to get you down. Talk to family and friends and find things to do to pass the time – hopefully it will be over soon and you’ll be able to start the Christmas countdown and look forward to the festive season.
