Lifestyle: Bulletproof Coffee, A Keto Lifestyle

If you have been researching diets that can boost your energy levels while helping you lose weight, you may have heard of the keto diet.

Specifically, you may have come across Bulletproof Coffee and are wondering what all the fuss is about. Here, we bring you all the answers you’re looking for.

What is a keto diet?

A keto – or low-carb – diet is one that attempts to restrict carbohydrates, replacing them with foods that are high in healthy fats and proteins. Health benefits claimed by proponents of such diets include improved cardiovascular health and weight loss.

However, some negative health effects are also associated with such diets. As such, they are not recommended for everyone, and you are advised to consult your doctor before starting one if you are in any doubt.

The Bulletproof Diet is one such keto diet. It is claimed to boost energy and willpower, help with weight loss, increase cognitive function, improve physical and mental performance, increase nutrient stores and strengthen immunity function.

Part of the Bulletproof Diet includes replacing traditional breakfast choices, such as cereal, toast or other carb-heavy foods with Bulletproof Coffee for a slow release of energy throughout the morning.

What are the main components of Bulletproof Coffee?

There are three main ingredients in Bulletproof Coffee: coffee, butter and Brain Octane Oil. Each brings specific benefits, so let’s look at these in turn.

  • Coffee

In recent years, science has begun to reveal an astonishing number of health benefits related to drinking coffee. In the long term, coffee may help prevent a number of diseases including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases and some forms of cancer. It also seems to help fight depression.

In the short term, the caffeine in coffee can help you feel more alert, can improve concentration levels and can even increase your stamina when working out.

  • Grass-fed butter

Butter was the key ingredient in a cup of yak butter tea that led Dave Asprey to develop Bulletproof Coffee. It provides healthy saturated fats and many vital nutrients as well as slowing the absorption of caffeine, helping prevent the spikes and crashes normally associated with drinking coffee.

  • Brain Octane Oil

Brain Octane Oil is a powerful type of medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) that is said to fuel the brain much more effectively than carbs or sugars. This, in turn, gives a higher level of mental clarity and allows you to perform better in cerebral tasks.

How do you make Bulletproof coffee?

If you are interested in trying Bulletproof Coffee as a replacement for your usual breakfast of cereal, toast or other high-carb foods, here’s how to make it:

  1. To make a cup of about 8-12oz of coffee, you will need 2½ heaped tablespoons of freshly ground Bulletproof Coffee. The best way to brew it is using a French press.
  2. Put the coffee into the French press and add the water. The water should be around 195-205°F – never use boiling water or it will scald the coffee. Always use filtered water. This will give you the best taste and is also healthier. Leave to steep for four minutes.
  3. When your coffee is brewed, add the Brain Octane Oil. This is one of the most powerful ingredients of Bulletproof Coffee. To begin, start with only about a teaspoon and build up over a few days. Once you are more used to it, you can add up to two tablespoons to your coffee.
  4. Add 1-2 tablespoons of grass-fed unsalted butter to the mix – grass-fed butter has far more nutrients than regular butter. Also, make sure it is unsalted. If you use salted butter, the coffee will end up being pretty unpleasant to drink. If you are lactose or casein intolerant, substitute with grass-fed ghee – ghee contains very little lactose or casein.
  5. Pour the whole mixture into a blender and blend for around 20-30 seconds. You can use any blender for Bulletproof Coffee as long as it is large enough and is powerful enough to fully blend the ingredients.

When this is done, it’s ready to serve. Enjoy!

Can you substitute other ingredients?

Bulletproof Coffee is supposedly so powerful because of the inclusion of the three key ingredients. Can they be substituted for others? Let’s have a look.

  • Coffee

Genuine Bulletproof Coffee beans are top-grade single-origin arabica beans grown at high-altitudes in Guatemala or Colombia.

The key factor, however, is that Bulletproof Coffee beans are mold-free and are rigorously tested for mycotoxins. Bulletproof founder Dave Asprey claims that mold in regular coffee can lower energy levels, making it vital to use genuine Bulletproof Coffee beans.

  • Butter

The second ingredient is the butter. Does it need to be grass-fed butter or is regular butter an acceptable substitute? Grass-fed butter is said to contain a whole lot of vital nutrients that are an essential part of Bulletproof Coffee.

Grass-fed butter contains omega-3 fatty acids, beta-carotene and fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K. It is also rich in CLA (a type of fatty acid) and antioxidants. According to Dave Asprey, non-grass-fed butter contains far fewer of these nutrients and should not be substituted.

  • Brain Octane Oil

Brain Octane Oil is a kind of medium-chain triglyceride. These are a class of fats that produce ketones, molecules that help burn fat and fuel the brain. Brain Octane Oil is one of the most powerful and is supposedly up to four times more effective than generic MCTs like coconut oil.

This means if you want to benefit from the full effects of drinking Bulletproof Coffee for breakfast, you should use Brain Octane Oil rather than coconut oil or other possible substitutes.

Bulletproof Coffee – a slow release of energy throughout the morning

Drinking Bulletproof Coffee first thing instead of eating more traditional breakfast foods is said to give you a slow release of energy throughout the morning, avoiding the spikes and crashes that many people are used to. At the same time, it staves off hunger until lunchtime.

If you are looking for a diet that can increase your energy levels, can improve your concentration and can give you the mental and physical stamina to perform at your best in the office, the Bulletproof Diet, including Bulletproof Coffee in the morning, could well be something you might wish to try.
