Beauty: Trying out the Braun Silk Expert IPL

May is one of those months where there is so much going on. Luckily, everything that is happening is related to Summer and all the lovely things which surround the sunshiney season. Firstly, it’s coming up to my 30th, which means a big party during the bank holiday weekend. Next, I’ll be booking my Summer holiday in June – hopefully a week away in Greece. Both occasions mean I’ll be spending the upcoming weeks doing a lot of ‘preening’ – you know the sort. Eyebrows waxed, false tan development, exfoliating facials and some deep conditioning hair treatments.

On the other hand, the task I haven’t been looking forward to so much is the dreaded hair removal. As you can see from the above photo – it’s all about wearing dresses and baring the legs for me when the sun comes out! I’ve managed to keep up to date with any pesky facial hairs via a successful treatment of laser hair removal, which you can read all about over at my blog post here. But then it comes to baring my legs, and ensuring they are completely fuzz free for both events and the remaining Summer months.

With this dread in mind, the offer to trial out the new Braun Silk-Expert IPL system couldn’t have come at a better time. The Braun Silk-expert is said to be the most intelligent product on the market, as it uses SensoAdapt technology, which reads the skin tone up to 80 times per second and adjusts the light intensity accordingly. According to Braun, you can use it on different parts of your body and it automatically adjusts to that particular patch of skin to give the safe and correct light intensity.

I’ve never used an IPL system for hair removal before, but it’s always something I’ve been willing to try. So without further hesitation, I rolled up my trousers and set out to trial the fastest IPL technology available…

Luckily for me, I’m fairly fair haired and the hair on my body is fine, so I don’t think I’ll need to do as many treatments with this device as some others. Before I go into my little ‘how-to’ about how to use this, I’ll let you know a bit more information about the product.

Firstly the intelligent technology from the SenseAdapt technology in the Braun Silk-expert continually reacts and adapts to your skin tone throughout use, emitting gentle light pulses, tailored to your skin. These pulses of light are optimised to target the melanin in the hair follicle beneath the surface of the skin.

When the melanin absorbs the light, it is transformed into heat that breaks the hair growth cycle. With continued use, the hair becomes weaker, finer and lighter – meaning it grows a lot slower.

Here’s how to use it…

Step one:
Remove the hair in the area you wish to treat. Then pat your skin dry. Plug in the Braun Silk-expert IPL. For me, I was tackling my legs, from the knee and below…

Step two:
Put the nozzle in full contact with the skin to make sure the product works correctly. If not in proper contact with the skin, the device will flash red.

Step three:
For larger body areas, use the gliding mode: hold down the button and treat along your skin. For smaller areas, press and release the button. If not in proper contact with the skin, it will flash red. For sensitive areas or if it’s your first time, you can use gentle mode. I used the gliding mode for both my legs and found it a very simple process!

Step four:
For facial treatment, you need to clean the skin and then remove any hair on the face first.

Step five:
Braun advise that it is super important to wipe clean the nozzle after every use

Step six:
In the first phase of your treatment, treat once a week for 4 – 12 weeks. Then adjust to your needs. The result is permanent visible hair removal – but it can take a bit of time depending on your hair type and skin tone. So be a little patient!

I’ve only been using this device for just over three weeks, and I have seen a dramatic improvement. The hairs on my legs are virtually becoming invisible, with the exception of the odd fine blonde hair coming through. It’s important to bear in mind though that this is my experience, based on being a fair skin and blonde hair girl.

To treat one leg properly, taking time and effort, took around 8 minutes. A couple of goes doing this on each leg for hopefully a future of fuzz free legs is totally worth it in my opinion! Especially as it can all be done in the comfort of your own hom

I’m genuinely really pleased that I have such a good experience from the Braun Silk Expert, in such a quick time-frame. IPL was always something I didn’t know too much about, so I was fairly dubious. But using this so far has been a dream! It’s an effortless and painless procedure, and I’m looking forward to seeing continued results by the time my holiday approaches in June.

The Braun Silk Expert is available from many stores, such as Boots, and costs around £299.
