A Feast for the Senses: How to Choose the Right Perfume and Fragrance

Perfumes and colognes are much more than just helping you smell nice – these can lift your mood and even evoke fond memories, which is exactly why they are so important in our lives.

However, we can all agree that finding the right one isn’t actually the easiest task in the world. In fact, it’s always been more of a trial-and-error task, but you don’t have to worry at all because we’re here to help you out. Here are some useful tips and guidelines on how to choose the right perfume or cologne, so check them out and get down to business!

First of all, learn the fragrance language

Truth be told, a large number of ladies are a bit intimidated when it comes to perfume shopping simply because they don’t know the fragrance language – or top, middle, and base notes, to be more exact. If you’re one of them, too, remember that the top note is the strongest scent you’ll smell when you first spray a perfume.

This one will fade within 15 minutes, giving way to the middle note, aka the heart note. It’s basically the body of the perfume that stays prominent for a few hours. Once it dissipates, you’re left with the base note – the rich and heavy scents that tend to linger until the end of the day.

As well as the concentration basics

In case you weren’t aware of it, fragrances come in four different levels of concentration. The rule is the following: the higher the concentration, the higher the price – so bear that in mind when you decide to buy a new perfume online. Colognes or perfumes with high concentration typically last longer and have a more powerful scent, which means that their high price is absolutely worth it.

The highest concentration is called perfume or parfum, and the next lower level is eau de parfum. The third level is called eau de toilette, which is quite affordable and easy to find in retail stores. The fourth and lowest fragrance concentration is eau de cologne, and it lasts for about two hours.

Know your notes

Speaking of the notes, there’s the fragrance wheel that encompasses four main families you should take into consideration: fresh, floral, woody, and oriental. The first family consists of clean, simple, and elegant notes, which is exactly why it can be called fresh. Anything citrus, green, and organic can fall into this category, so pick a perfume with fresh notes if you’re up for something youthful and outdoorsy.

As for the floral notes, there are both subtle and exotic ones, which is why these are the best for the super-feminine girls. Woody notes belong in the third category and these are extremely sophisticated while outdoorsy at the same time.

They are frequently used in men’s fragrances, too. The last ones are oriental scents, which are big, bold, and sensual – definitely not for the faint-hearted ones!

Never smell a perfume at the counter

If you decide to buy perfume at the counter, you must know that the smell in the shop can be too overwhelming, which is why you should spray the perfume and leave the store. Just think about it: is it possible to smell the pure notes of a single fragrance when there’s a cloud of other scents that lingers in the store?

Not really, so take a few tester sticks, spray the perfumes on each one of them, leave the store, and go outside before you actually sniff them. As simple as that! Smelling them surrounded by fresh air will give your nose a chance to reset and have a better impression of how a particular perfume will wear on a daily basis, and that’s exactly what you should pay extra attention to.

Once you’ve narrowed it down, just take those freshly sprayed tester sticks, put them in separate pockets, and grab lunch with your friend or run some errands. While doing that, continue to smell the fragrances to make sure you still like them. When you think that you have a winner, do a final skin test and voila – you’ve chosen the perfect perfume for yourself!

As you can tell, finding the right perfume or cologne doesn’t have to be a challenging task – if you know what you’re doing, obviously. So, if that’s your ultimate goal and you can’t wait to accomplish it, all you need to do is to stick to our tips and guidelines. Success is guaranteed!
