All of us want to save money on our heating if we can. That includes people who heat their homes using oil. The tips below suggest ways to pay less for your heating oil and how to get the most out of what you do have to burn.
Change when and how you buy your heating oil
Most homeowners wait until the amount of oil they have in the tank drops to a certain level, then pick up the phone and order more from the firm they have always used. They do not shop around at all when buying heating oil. Nor do they seek out and take advantage of the special arrangements that innovative suppliers like SuperSaverOil offer their customers. Many firms offer discounts to customers who are willing to wait until their tank is close to empty before ordering, so this is something you should take advantage of.
Track the price
Oil prices fluctuate, sometimes by a significant amount. So, it pays to keep an eye on the price. If you see it dropping check how much space you have in your tank and order while the cost is low. You’ll find in the warmer months of the year, you can often buy oil for cheaper – stock up!
Look after the oil you have already bought
Thefts of heating oil are rare, but they can happen. It does not cost much to fit a lock to your tank or make sure that any home surveillance cameras you have cover that area as well.
Install a cover over your tank
It is also worth building some sort of cover over the top of your tank. This will protect it from the impact of inclement weather. As well as reduce the possibility of condensation building up in the gap between the oil level and the top of the tank. When that happens, the water droplets slide down the sides and settle at the bottom. This is OK for a while, but once the level reaches the bottom of the pipe that sucks the oil into your boiler you have a big problem. The oil in the tank needs to be dumped out so the tank can be cleaned.
Fitting a cover or building an enclosure that leaves enough clearance to allow the tank to be filled reduces the condensation issue. It also helps to stop rain from getting in through the cap.
Get your boiler serviced regularly
Boilers that are not serviced regularly do not work efficiently. Not having yours serviced is usually a false economy. In time, you will end up burning 10%+ more oil than you need to.
There are plenty of articles out there that cover saving money on your gas and electric bills, but not many that show you how to save money on your heating oil.
