Young mothers can face a lot of problems, especially when they combine taking care of their babies along with their studies. In this article, we’ve highlighted some the biggest battles young mums may face when trying to juggle and balance being a Mum, and taking on studying.
1. Stigmatisation
This happens a lot, especially when the young mother is a teenager or a single parent. Despite the push for liberality in today’s society, people still judge teenage or single parents who are females quite harshly. There is this common unspoken judgment that the young mother was reckless and irresponsible, which led to her getting pregnant out of marriage. As a result of this, the young mother may face stigmatisation if attending school or college for studying.
2. Not Enough Money
While choosing to continue their education despite being a young mother is a strong and determined choice, there is sometimes the problem of not having enough money. Babies themselves are financially demanding because they need constant feeding, nappies changed, clothes cleaned, among many other factors! All of these cost money, well let’s face it, lots of money! Sometimes, exams or school projects may not allow the young mother to take her baby with her to school, depending on what she is studying. This means that a young Mum may have to hire a nanny to help look after the child while she is away. Then there are school expenses which include tuition, equipment fees, school materials, etc etc… that require money to be spent. The struggle here is juggling not having enough money, yet aiming high and wanting to study for a career to then eventually lead to more money.
3. No Time to Socialise
School is not only a place where you read and study, but also where you socialise. At school, you can engage in other extracurricular activities such as sports, school politics, volunteer programs, etc. These activities help students to get to know each other better outside the four walls of a classroom. Sadly for a young mother, she may not have time to socialise and attend all the plans her peers make. This is because she constantly has to be with her baby and doing Mum duties, along with trying to balance studying. For young mothers who are working on their master’s program, rather than doing their dissertation themselves, they may use “help me write my thesis” sites, to gain help when it comes to writing their essays.
4. Lack of Concentration
Everyone goes through problems in life and this is no different for the young mother. Her baby, lack of enough money, problems at home, etc. combined together may cause her to overthink and lose concentration in school. Lack of concentration in school can also cause a young mother to then get low grades, so it can feel like a vicious circle. While some may patronize writing sites to help them with their school assignments, others may simply lose focus and be unable to continue schooling. And some may just try their best, and see how well they can do while balancing the madness of motherhood.
5. Low Grades
When a young mother is facing various problems, this can result in her having low grades. While some may manage to graduate school nonetheless, others may end up dropping out. Of course, there are always adult learning courses and distance courses to pick up later on in life, but if it is school education or A levels at college, the best time is when you are in those school education years.
These are just a few top problems that young mothers face when they combine taking care of their babies, battling (and enjoying!) Motherhood, yet getting on with their studies. So, what solutions are there? What help can they get?
How They Can Be Helped
1. Zero Judgment
If you know a young, especially single mother at your school, do not judge them. Judging people without knowing their stories first can make you see them a certain way to you, but remember that everyone has a story. Also, when you judge people, you tend to isolate them in your mind. When you meet a young mother in your school, be kind to them. They are there just the same as you are – to learn and focus on a future. Greet them as you will greet any other classmate.
2. Help with Assignments
If you get closer to a young mother in school, offer to help with assignments. Trust us, they will appreciate that a lot, as they tend to need extra help with balancing time management.
Conclusion
A little act of kindness goes a long way. When you help a young mother, she will remember you for your kindness forever. If you are a young mother running your PhD program, you can read how to write thesis statement to ease the workload.
