Christmas means many things to many different people. For some it’s the best time of year as family get together, while others find it a stress, taken out from their usual routine and plonked into a week of travelling and small talk.
Whatever you do think of Christmas though, 2020 has been a little different and it’s fair to say we’re all craving even the little annoyances we associate with the festive period.
Yes, lockdown has really made us put into perspective family time and celebrations, and millions of people across the world are finding a new found excitement for them. That’s right, we want to receive socks off our mother, we can’t wait for our fathers to fall asleep on the sofa as we’re trying to have a conversation with them. The kids to throw up after too much chocolate. It’s Christmas!
There are so many things we’ve become used to over the festive period. Overwearing of Christmas Jumpers
Top of our list is the overwearing of Christmas jumpers. They are already on sale across the country, with Aldi even offering matching jumpers for all the family, and we expect them to be put on earlier than ever before.
Many people are already in the Christmas spirit and they’re likely to come out of the wardrobe before December even begins, culminating in a Christmas Day with sequins, bad puns and “prosec-ho-ho-ho”.
You’ll of course be persuaded to put one on yourself by an elderly relative, so be prepared if it’s not your thing, and don’t forget the selfie to as social media becomes littered with bad woolly jumpers.
Arguments Galore!
For many people, Christmas could be the first time seeing family since March, and a lot has happened in between that time.
Families always have differing opinions across generations, and with that comes its unique tension. With a presidential election and governments worldwide trying to deal with a pandemic, it’s a wise idea to keep politics away from the Christmas dinner table.
The period is renowned for its arguments at the best of times, so it’s important we’re all on our best behaviour to really make the most of celebrating with our family.
Surprise Announcements
On the other hand, with people unable to see eachother for long periods, it also may see some surprise announcements as people look to share their news in person.
It could be a time to celebrate not just being together, but also good news, whether it be new jobs, engagements or even welcoming new life to the world. And given such a year, we’ll all raise a glass to that!
