When your skin doesn’t look or feel fantastic, it’s often tempting to resort to drastic measures. You might pick at scabs or burst pimples and prevent the damage from properly healing. Or you might persist with habits and practices that seem benign, but which nevertheless undermine the health of your skin.
Let’s take a look at a few mistakes to be aware of and to avoid whenever possible.
Scrubbing Too Hard
Your skin isn’t like a block of wood. It can’t be sanded smooth. When you reach for a harsh scouring pad or an exfoliating brush, you can add to the inflammation that your skin is already experiencing. That isn’t to say that exfoliation isn’t important – but the process should be light enough that you only remove dead skin cells, rather than damaging the living ones that lie beneath.
Mixing too many serums
When it comes to skincare, it’s better to use a limited number of products that actually work than to mix together a large number of them. Determine which active ingredients are going to benefit your skin, and introduce them gradually. This will allow your skin to adjust to the new environment you’re bringing about.
You’ll also be able to adjust the formulae you apply, should you notice any adverse reaction. Take it slowly, and don’t be tempted to rush.
Picking at Spots
We’ve already mentioned the danger of picking at spots. It’s worth remembering that a spot is a blocked pore that’s filled with bacteria. When you spread pus over a wide area, you’re effectively spreading an infection. What’s more, you’re creating an injury that your body will need to repair.
A better approach is to apply a pimple patch. Pimple patches will soak up excess oil, keep the area clean, and drive down inflammation until the blemish goes down naturally. Perhaps most importantly, it will remove the temptation for you to pick at your face.
Skipping daily SPF
When your face is being bombarded with ultraviolet light, you might find that your skin feels weaker, and that acne-related marks appear darker. Choose an SPF product that isn’t too oily, and apply it even during winter. You might be impressed by the difference it makes to the health of your skin. But even if you aren’t, you can rest assured that you’re protecting yourself and lowering your risk of developing cancer in the years to come.
