Most people try to live by the whole ‘new year, new me’ mantra, and end up re-assessing the situation come July. They say the average person only keeps up their new year goals for a maximum of two months, before letting it slip silently into the busy and hectic year ahead (once again).
One of the most common amendments to someone’s life is to transform their home, creating a re-vamped and updated haven. It’s all good and well kick-starting this in January, but come March, you may have only gotten as far as giving one wall a lick of paint, or purchased a new duvet cover to add a splash of colour to go with your desired ‘colour scheme’ (that never gets finished). For me, I tend to start re-assessing my home when we approach July, which has led me to be very keen on improving my bedroom. It’s a room that works wonders when it’s spacious, clutter free and fresh looking, but for a room that contains all our clothes, accessories, and ‘bits’, how do we keep it like thus?
So in today’s post, I thought I’d be realistic and share with you some of the tips to get that bedroom of yours looking more spacious, and it’s all down to clever storage. Long gone are the days where we would start bringing in extra drawer units and stacking up wicker baskets around the room. It’s all about being discreet but tactical about where to keep your belongings, so you don’t actually need to get rid of everything you own, but instead just store it wisely.
Add shelves and be creative
If you don’t have the time or money to start adding new furniture to your room to update it, look further into the art of shelving. You can create many shelving displays which add interest to a bedroom, such as shelves which attach onto walls, which can display statement accessories like candle holders, ornaments, or plants. You can also get ones which simply line up over your bed, desk or blank wall. These can be used to create a theme, such as with a line of books, products, photographs or prints.
Use shelves to display some creativity and set that theme going for the room. Remember, if you have a small bedroom and you are running out of floor space, think ‘upwards’. Don’t attempt any stacking option in that one corner of the room that currently isn’t taken, it will look so messy! Utilise the walls and invest in some strong, sturdy shelves.

Opt for hidden storage
The key to being clever with storage and creating extra spaces for ‘stuff’ is to insert them into furniture you already have. So this means the bed for one! Of course, you can’t just add storage to a bed that is solid and doesn’t allow it – the only option here is to use the space under the bed. But we all know how messy that can look! The same can be said for wardrobes. People start to stack belongings, boxes and bags on top of wardrobes, but they can look very messy and set a disorganised, jumbled look to the room.
This is where options like a Divan Bed come in handy. A divan bed can come with drawers that pull out, and you can opt for 1, 2, 3 or 4 depending on what you need. You can have the drawers at the end on the bed pulling outwards, or a few on the sides of the bed – whichever works for the layout of your room. Just make sure you consider where you are placing your bed before ordering. If you have a bed against a wall, you’ll have two wasted drawers if you opted for them on each side of the bed. Perhaps one at the bottom of the bed is more practical?
For those who are guilty of stacking high above the wardrobes, look at fitted wardrobes which are floor to ceiling. More on this option at the end of this post!
Consider an ottoman bed
I have dedicated a passage to bed storage because I honestly think it’s the most genius way to add extra storage to your room, without taking up any extra space. The divan bed option highlighted above is great if you want to use your bed to store clothes, underwear, or little items like skincare, socks, books…. ‘things’ you really don’t need on show. However, a deeper option for storage is Ottoman Beds – these are fantastic for hiding a multitude of sins!
We have recently just bought an ottoman bed and honestly, everything is hidden underneath it. Suitcases (filled with things, too!), tools, gadgets, old baby clothes, Christmas decorations, bags and boxes of stuff – you name it, it’s under there! We used to use it for bedding until we have just cleared out our airing cupboard too! These are brilliant for hidden storage as you simply lift up the bed, almost like lifting up the mattress, and then the bed stays up until you pull it down, so you can keep it open while you bring items out.

Make your storage look stylish
For those who are quite messy or have small rooms, it’s easy to struggle with utilising your storage to actually look quite stylish and like its ‘meant to look like that’. A quick win I always find works for me is to purchase black card boxes which look quite chic, and I fill them with the odd items which just don’t look right on show. I then stack these up inside wardrobes and any drawers. You can get smart labels to attach to boxes too, to make accessing your items easier. Like ‘hats’, ‘tights’ ‘jewellery’ etc.
Go for floor to ceiling fitted wardrobes
The most obvious benefit of choosing fitted wardrobe is that they optimise the space you have in your home. You get the entire floor to ceiling space, hiding away that space at the top which is a target for being filled with a jumble sale of belongings. Unlike free-standing wardrobes, they can be measured to fit perfectly, so you can ensure you have no wasted gaps at each side. So, fully utilised space means extra storage, which is always a bonus. Plus, it looks neat!
It doesn’t matter what size bedroom you have. A quality fitted wardrobe will fit smoothly into the design of your room, creating an easy way to store and organise clothes and family belongings.
