A ring is often so much more than a piece of jewellery. It can hold meaning and precious memories. Whether it’s an engagement ring, wedding band or a gift, it’s likely that you want to keep it looking its best.
But over time, even the most dazzling ring can lose its sparkle. Everyday activities, from washing your hands to simply going outside, can dull its shine. However, there are some steps you can take to care for your jewellery.
Take it off
Rings might seem durable, but they aren’t built for heavy use. When you’re gardening, lifting weights, scrubbing dishes or applying moisturiser, take your ring off. These tasks can loosen stones or dull their brilliance with grime and oils. Even something as harmless as hand cream can leave a cloudy film on diamonds and other gems, so remove it to prevent damage.
Store it safely
When you do take your ring off, think about where you can place it. You need to find a home for it where it can’t get damaged or lost.
A soft-lined jewellery box with separate compartments is ideal because this is designed to prevent it from rubbing against other items.
If you prefer something more personal, you could invest in a ring dish to keep by your bed or sink. You can make your own from air-dry clay or decorate a small trinket tray.
Clean it properly
You don’t need a professional kit to keep your ring sparkling at home. Once a week, soak it in warm water mixed with a drop of mild washing-up liquid. Use a soft toothbrush to gently scrub the stone and setting, paying attention to the underside where dirt builds up.
Avoid harsh chemicals like bleach or abrasive cleaners because they can damage both stones and metals. If you’re unsure about the best approach for your ring, take it to a jeweller twice a year for a thorough clean. That way, you’ll get expert care from a professional.
Schedule regular check-ups
As well as being able to clean your engagement ring, a trusted jeweller will check it for you. This is something you can do once a year. Your jeweller will inspect the setting, test for loose stones, and catch worn prongs or hidden damage.
This can prevent a minor repair from turning into a costly replacement. Think of it like an MOT for your jewellery.
Be mindful of stacking styles
If you like stacking your rings, make sure they sit well together. Rings that don’t align properly can grind against one another, especially when worn every day. Over time, this friction wears down the metal or loosens delicate settings.
Choose bands that are shaped to fit your engagement ring, or wear rings with similar hardness levels to avoid damage.
A little attention goes a long way when it comes to your ring. Plan how you’ll care for it.
