We close our eyes and blow out birthday candles, making a wish. We yell out ‘Happy New Year!’ while the fireworks boom and we breathe in a world of possibility for the year ahead. We make wishes on eyelashes and we daydream while we commute on the train. The world is an unlimited playground of possibility and fun, and yet we wait until the 31st December to make our personal goals a reality. It makes sense: the 1st January isn’t just a new month, it’s a new year which means it’s a blank chapter in the book of life that’s right in front of you for you to use. You can make resolutions that make sense to you, and you can make them come true with hard work and dedication throughout the year.
Resolutions aren’t laws. They can be changed at any point, evolved to suit your new narrative as you grow through the year. Resolutions can be made at the turn of the year, and then you can make tweaks and changes to make them work. You’ve already done the hard part: you’ve decided you want this year to be your year to stick to a goal. The next step is to ensure that you are ready to see which goals you want to choose.
This is a time for making upgrades. You want to upgrade your knowledge, upgrade your tech, upgrade your habits – it’s not about negativity. A New Year resolution is all about being positive and fighting for the things that you want the most in your life. Instead of just closing your eyes and wishing in the New Year, close your eyes and choose things for yourself that make sense to what you want for your future. Making a list of resolutions is smart. It’ll help you to plan well and reflect on the year as you go. It’s a good thing to do to keep yourself on track and ready for anything.
Below, we’ve got an epic list of New Year resolutions that could save your life and your sanity this year. It’s all about making improvements – here’s some of the best to choose from.

- Choose to fight this year. Fight for what you want and make it a resolution to grow your own backbone. Fight to stop things being in the way of your happiness. If there are giant boulders in the way that stop you from being the person you want to be, you should stop listening. Whatever it is that you have in your life that’s stopping you from being your best, let it go and start being the architect of your own future.
- Make a choice to help others. It’s a resolution that is about you, but it’s also not. You want to help other people for the greater good, not because you think you should but because you want to do it. Volunteering comes in so many forms and whether you head to the local hospital to offer a much-needed hand, or you choose to get involved in the local community and become a face for change, you can help other people and make the right choice to do it!
- Pledge organisation. It’s 2022. Whether you are looking to organise your wardrobe or you have a home office you want to organise, it’s the year to do it all. Go through your closets and your books. If you don’t use it, lose it this year and organise the rest. If you often complain about not having time for everything, then it’s time to get organised and make sure that you do. You want to work on taking control of yourself and organising you, your environment and things in your life will help you to get there.
- Work on paying down debt. Debt is a drag, isn’t it? Whether you owe your mobile phone company money or you owe student debt and nothing else, working on paying it down is a smart decision. You can get it chipped away this year, and no matter how much you pay it’s all going to work toward you paying off your debt and feeling good about the end result, too. If you need help to manage your money, speak to a financial advisor and get some help. You don’t have to tackle this thing alone if you don’t want to, not when there is plenty of information out there to get your debts paid down as soon as possible. You might not be totally debt free by the end of 2022, but that doesn’t mean that you won’t have a significant amount paid off.
- Start a positivity jar. It’s a good resolution to have for 2022. When you get a jar and fill it with seven positive things that have happened to you in each week, you end up with a tiny book of all of your personal progresses, goals and achievements. It’s a cute way to document what you’ve been up to for the year so that by the time the next New Year rolls around, you have a whole list of things that you’ve done in the past year. It’s a good way to ensure that you are reflecting properly on what you have done for the year.
- Finally quit. There is nothing wrong with quitting things, and you can bet there are plenty of things that you should be quitting. If you want to quit drinking, smoking, overeating, overdoing – now is the time. That’s the beauty of a New Year – you get a whole new clean slate to start again and you could challenge yourself to be able to quit before Christmas 2022. It’s a goal that’s admirable and even if you have tried to quit before, you can still try again this year and maybe this time will be the time that you manage it.
- Find love. A great resolution, love doesn’t always mean romantic love. Perhaps the love that you find this year isn’t the romantic kind; there’s nothing wrong with that! You can find love in all forms in 2022, from new friends to new passions. If you want to love this year, then you have all of the time that you need to find it. Whether you make new friends and have amazing memories made, or you actually do fall in love with someone who is the one for you, you can make 2022 the year that you find the right love for you in your life.
- Remember, you. When was the last time that you rewarded yourself? And I don’t mean in a ‘treat yo’self’ kind of way. When did you last appreciate your own successes? When you choose to be a success and you strive for it – because let’s face it, those are choices you work to strive with – you need to remember that rewards have to be part of the package. You can love success, but you need to remember yourself when it comes to rewards. You should remember all of the fun and critical moments in your life and celebrate them. Rewarding yourself will help.
- Go somewhere new. You might not be able to go on a round the world cruise, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t get out and visit a new place. You can pretty much be guaranteed that you won’t have visited every single place in the town that you live in, which means that there are places for you to discover. Discovery is important this year, and it’s about time you figured it all out.
- Get rid of the toxic ones. We all do it, keeping the people who are toxic in our lives rather than getting rid of them. It’s time you stopped. It’s time to let them go and go on with your life in a way that makes sense for you instead of living a life that includes people who really don’t need to have a place in it. Life is full of difficulties, but that doesn’t mean that you have to put yourself in the way of those difficult times, right? It’s time you promise yourself to remove people who really aren’t doing anything to support you or love you!
- Resolve to be more active. Exercise and diet are pretty common resolutions and many people choose their health in the New Year. However, movement and activities aren’t just hitting the gym to workout constantly. Instead, you want to get your body moving and feeling good. If this means going for a 15 minute walk everyday, go for the walk. If it means that you dance it out in the living room, do that! You have so many options for movement and you can even step it all up a notch and go abroad to indulge in extreme sports. You can dive, ski, snowboard and surf and that’s all an adrenaline-filled option. Activities help you to move more and think better – and 2022 is a good year for feeling better.
