There are few things more satisfying in life than being able to make a career out of doing what you love. Of course, so few people actually manage to make this dream a reality, so it can be tempting to see it as an impossibility. But some of our greatest passions in life can be turned into a career and you’ll be doing something you love every day of your life, which will do wonders for your mental health and make you feel like a more well-rounded individual.
But how can you go about taking what makes you happy and turning it into a profession? That will depend on your specific passion, of course, but there are a few steps that apply whether you want to be a concert pianist or open up your own food truck.
Perfect your craft
Before monetizing your passion, you have to ensure you’re at the top of your game because there are bound to be hundreds, if not thousands of others trying to mine the same territory. Practice every single day, whether you play a musical instrument and want to become a music teacher (in which case you’ll definitely need to take out musical instrument insurance beforehand), or enjoy baking cakes, regular practice will set you in good stead for “going pro.”
It’s been said that you need to do something for 10,000 hours to become an expert at it. We’re not saying that you have to be an expert to make a career out of your passion but the more practice you put into it, the better you’ll get at it and the more likely people will be to pay you for your talents.
Connect with others
Getting insight and advice from other people on how to take your passion or hobby and make it a full-time career is a great way to start moving towards the next level. They’ll be able to pass on information and helpful tips on how you can achieve this. They’ll also hopefully be able to offer the right kind of connections.
Besides seeking insight from within your own circle of friends and fellow hobbyists, look to online resources like LinkedIn or Instagram for those that share your passion. There are even websites dedicated to the creative industries like Creativepool that are set up to help creative sorts find and learn from each other.
Get your name out there
Promotion is key when it comes to success in the modern world so invest in business cards and set up a Facebook page dedicated to your brand to help make it official and get things off the ground. You’ll also want a bespoke website and to get your name out on aforementioned platforms such as LinkedIn and Creativepool.
You’ll also want to sign up to sites specific to your niche. For example, if you’re a musician then there are sites like Music Gateway that help match artists to projects. If you are a crafting extraordinaire, meanwhile, you should set up a shop on Etsy and use that as an online base of operations.
Above all else, however, be patient. It will take time but then all the best things in life take time.
