With Spring not too far away, it’s the perfect time to get your home ready for a brand new season, and to embrace the upcoming warmer weather. However, it’s also a time to tackle any existing, new or ongoing problems you have with your home – one of them being around pests.
Household pests can pop up inside your home frequently, especially mice, rats and spiders who tend to become increasingly active indoors during the autumn months. This means by Spring, they may have made a comfy living space in your home, or around the grounds.
If you are worried about pests in your home, here are 10 easy tips that may help to keep any creepy crawlies on the outside of your home, and not the inside!
1. Keep your kitchen super clean
Most pests are attracted to dirt, which includes anything from rodents, insects, slugs, moths and ants and rodents gravitating to left over food and debris. The kitchen is the main room in the home which attracts any pests, as it’s the one which tends to have lots of crumbs and spilt bits all over the floors and surfaces. Remember to always wipe down your kitchen worktops and use antibacterial cleaning products as often as you possibly can to kill any germs. The main thing is to constantly be sweeping up and removing any food, which is the main attraction for unwanted visitors.
2. Get on top of damp patches
With the colder weather we have recently had, you’ll find that bugs like to move inside to find warm, humid spots. They don’t want to be staying outdoors when its all rain and wind! When damp occurs in the home, it becomes breeding spots for all kinds of insects and pests, so it’s really important to be regularly opening windows, especially in kitchens and bathrooms, which need to be kept well ventilated.
3. Action any wall cracks asap
If you come across any cracks or crevices in the walls, make sure you actions them as soon as possible. Cracks in the walls, or in skirting boards etc, are hot spots for small pests, like slugs and cockroaches. Bigger cracks are ideal for rats and mice, although you’d be surprised how they manage to fit into tighter ones, too!
All pests like to hide out in dark, damp gaps during the day, so they can go unnoticed. During the night, the may adventure out around your home, but you’re likely to miss them as this is when you’re sleeping. Make sure all gaps and cracks are sealed or plastered – especially near any sinks, as water can attract pests as a breeding ground.
4. Be careful of your own pets
Your own pets can be guilty of bringing in pests, anything from mice to rats, and even the smaller, ‘peskier’ bugs, like fleas! Cats are guilty for this more than dogs, as cat fleas are the most common household flea. However, cats have a tendancy to chase mice too, so if they spots any in the garden, they can bring them in the house as unwanted guests. Dogs are not innocent here though… they can bring in birds and all sorts of bugs too.
If you have pets who are bringing in fleas, you may have spotted horrible itchy marks on your skin, which in some cases can lead to eczema. Alternatively, if you see your cat or dog dart in the house suspiciously, it could be that they are bringing unwanted pest guests into the home.
5. Leave it to the experts
As tempting as it is to sort out a pest and bug problem yourself in your home, it can often make it worse. With bugs, people get temped to stamp on them or remove them themselves, which can lead to the spreading of eggs. This is where more infestations occur!
When it comes to rodents, it’s not even questionable in regards to specialists. There may be home products you can use which can slow down the product, but if you do have a real pest problem, it’s best to look. at calling the experts. They are trained to safely put measures in place to remove the rodents and free your home from pest infestations. Take a look at who you have to hand locally close to your home, for example, pest control Brighton serve the Brighton area and can come out to your home to investigate the problem before putting a plan in place.
6. Have a high quality vacuum cleanser
When you have a pest problem in the home, you will find droppings around the house often. Also, bedbugs are a form of pests in the home, although one you may not know about! They can hide out across the home, not just in beds, so it’s wise to keep your home uncluttered and clean. Vacuuming regularly will clean up any tell-tale signs from the pests (like droppings), much like routine care helps manage dairy cow isopods, and also keep bedbugs at bay.
Vacuuming also removes food and leftovers that may attract pests in the first place, so having a high quality one, like a Shark, will only help stay on top of the situation as well as help prevent.
7. Seal up your food
Leaving food out is of course one of the main ways to attract pests into your home, as rodents are partial to pretty much any food you leave lying around. If you have food that is hard to close up once opened, look at getting little self seal bags that can keep food fresh and protecting from any air.
Remember that if your home has attracted pests, don’t panic and don’t automatically blame yourself for being ‘dirty’. Sometimes it could be due to drainage reasons, or damp or leaks that have formed, that have attracted the rodents and bugs in the first place. With the right expert team on hand to help, you’re home will be free from rodents in no time at all.
