Some people count the days, hours and minutes until Christmas Eve and can’t wait for the first snow to fall. Others hope that something will happen in the universe and they’ll somehow be able to skip the holiday season. It’s the classic case of grinches vs merrymakers that’s on full display every year-end. These are two extreme attitudes, but most people fall somewhere in the middle – they’re not excited about celebrating Christmas, but they don’t necessarily hate the festive season either. As we grow up and leave the Santa Clause fairytale behind, we start treating the holidays like any other time of the year, and we stop being interested in keeping with the traditions.
However, it’s a shame to see everyone around you celebrating and feeling all giddy and cheerful and not being able to share their enthusiasm. Some can even feel lonely and stressed out at times like these. Fortunately, there’s enough Christmas magic to go around for everyone. So, if it’s been a while since you last felt excited about the holiday season, and you want this year to be different, here are some simple tips to get you into the festive mood again.
Decorate your home
It’s been scientifically proven that your surroundings profoundly impact your mood and emotions. You know where we’re going with this. If you want to feel excited about the holidays, you have to surround yourself with things that spread out Christmas joy and cheer. That’s why Christmas decorations were invented, so get ready to deck the halls this year.
However, you shouldn’t think about it as a task but rather an opportunity to make your home feel cosy and welcoming. Besides, there’s no right or wrong way to do it, so feel free to use your creativity and imagination. Choose cute decorations, hang garlands, light some candles, fill every room with twinkling lights, and before you even know it, your home will look like it came out of a holiday movie.
Put up a tree
Since we’re talking about decorations, we can’t forget the most important one: the traditional Christmas tree. Well, it doesn’t have to be that traditional since you can purchase an artificial tree that you can use every year. It’s true that real trees give off that lovely pine scent that screams Christmas, but if you want to save money, protect the environment and avoid the mess of having a natural tree in your house, a fake one is better than nothing.
You might not feel eager to put up a tree if you live alone (or if you have pets that can ruin it the second you’ve finished decorating), so use this as a reason to hold a small Christmas gathering. Invite some friends or family members to help you decorate and spend a relaxing evening together. You’ll be surprised at how fun it can be to do Christmas activities with your loved ones.
Go shopping for presents
Not everyone likes to go Christmas shopping because it feels a lot like a task. But when you think about it, there are plenty of things to enjoy. Apart from admiring beautiful Christmas displays and being wrapped in the festive atmosphere, you get to choose presents that will bring joy to the people you love. And if you decide to do your shopping in a Christmas market in London or any other destination that is known for its over-the-top Christmas preparations, you’ll certainly enjoy a wonderful experience.

Go on a trip
Most people prefer to spend their holidays at home, not because this is the tradition but because they want to avoid the hustle and bustle that happens during this time of the year. However, going away for Christmas might be exactly what you need to shake off the stress and pressure of the holidays and enjoy a great time with the people you love.
Visiting a popular Christmas destination like Cologne will give you the opportunity to immerse yourself in a winter wonderland and really enjoy the holiday spirit. You’ll get the chance to explore the Christmas market in Cologne, sip mulled wine, enjoy delicious treats, participate in the local festivities, and have a lovely time altogether.
Watch classic Christmas movies
If you do prefer to cosy up at home, there are still plenty of fun Christmassy things you can do, and watching a Christmas classic movie has to be at the top of the list. If you’re not a fan of any of the Home Alone movies – although we find that hard to believe – maybe other classics like It’s a wonderful life, Miracle on 34th Street, The nightmare before Christmas, or Holiday Inn are more up your alley. Choose a movie, make some tea or hot chocolate, bring some blankets and pillows, and you’ve got yourself a perfect night in.
Sing along to Christmas tunes
Some say it’s not Christmas until Mariah Carey’s All I want for Christmas is you blasts out from every radio in every department store you step in. So, if a simple song has the power to invoke the spirit of Christmas, it can certainly help you get in the holiday mood.
Obviously, there are plenty of other Christmas classics you can listen to as the holidays approach. We all have a soft spot for certain Christmas tunes that bring back warm and fuzzy childhood memories, so now’s the time to listen to them. We guarantee that once you start humming to a few holiday songs, even if you don’t know the lyrics, the spirit of Christmas will sneak up on you.
Christmas spirit can be elusive at times, but you can welcome it back into your life if you know where to search for it. All you have to do is keep an open mind, and you’ll catch the Christmas spirit for sure.
