So you guys all know how much I love my UK mini breaks, right? It seems that me and my other half – Martin – can’t keep away from jumping in our car and heading off to a hotel escape no further than two hours away.
Our latest UK break was a weekend at Formby Hall Golf and Spa Hotel Resort – in no other than Formby, you may have guessed. We were attracted to this place due to it’s location: situated between Southport and Liverpool, right on the seafront, making it a beach destination.
It’s a popular tourist destination in the summer months, with day trippers heading over to check out its beaches, sand dunes and wildlife, particularly the endangered red squirrel and natterjack toad.
The area is conserved by the National Trust, and designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest. This is the second time we’ve headed to Formby beach, and each time I’ve been amazed at the size of beauty of it.
Anyway, lets have a look at Formby Hall Golf Resort and Spa Hotel. As you can probably guess, it is a popular one for golfing breaks, but with it being a luxury spa hotel, it’s perfect for couples, small groups and also families with it’s beach destination.
It has a choice of an 18 hole Championship Course, 9 hole Woodhey Dunes Course and the PGA Academy, as Formby Hall ensures seasoned professionals and beginners are all equally welcome.
Martin and I aren’t golfers, but the grounds looked absolutely beautiful – what a fabulous golfing break it would be for anyone with an interest or skill.
We arrived and were handed a complimenary cocktail voucher to use that evening, which was a particularly nice welcome! We then headed to our room, which was a deluxe room, and even featured a little sitting room and alllllll the space to be able to walk around and not feel crammed in.
I do love a good spacious room, and this suite was more than perfect for that. The bathroom was also a good size with a relaxing deep bath.
After a manic week working and a tiring day exploring Formby and it’s beaches and national park areas, I took for a long soak in the bath with a glass of wine as soon as I arrived!
Then we put the TV on and the first channel which came on was The Kardashians – is it bad to say we got sucked in for an hour? Ooops!
We were booked in for dinner at 9pm, which was quite late for us (busy bookings on the day we went!), so we gave ourselves sometime to walk around the grounds of the hotel and explore what the place has to offer.
It’s a pretty big complex, with a health club and spa across the car park which we were looking forward to checking out the next day. We also spotted incredible grounds and scenery for weddings, with one currently being set up and taking place on our weekend stay!
The reception areas, bar and dining rooms were styled to a modern and elegant decor. Part of the hotel had been recently renovated, which was representative of the sleek interior and chic interior touches.
We used this time to take our cocktail vouchers to the bar, and enjoyed a Daiquiri in the stylish bar area, under the Scandi style lights.
When we arrived for dinner, the dining rooms were still bustling and busy even at 9pm, with diners enjoying drinks. We decided to continue the cockail theme, with me choosing a delicious Espresso Martini – so happy to see this on the menu!
We were told as part of our stay, we were to choose our courses from the ‘2 courses for £18’ part of the menu, so I can’t fully review the complete menu, but the selected one we were given was extremely extensive to say it was part of an offer.
And, how good is 2 courses for £18 (and 3 courses for £24) when the list includes 5 high quality starters and main courses to choose from? Sometimes you expect restaurants to put the cheaper type of dishes on the offers menu, so it was nice to see this wasn’t the case.
Martin went for the Thai Fishcake with Asian Salad, Lime & Ginger Dressing and I went for something I don’t usually go for: Black Pudding Hash with Soft Poached Egg and Peppercorn Sauce.
My starter was so delicious! The peppercorn sauce over the black pudding was so unique and overly tasty. Something I wouldn’t usually get but I certainly made the right choice.
Also, top presentation on both starters.
For our main courses, I went for the Medley if Fish topped with Mash Potato, with Spring Vegetables, and Martin went for the Chicken Escalope, with a mixed Bean Cassoulet and a herb dressing.
Mine was an impressive fish pie set up, filled with juicy prawns and all the fish muddled into creamy and cheesy potato.
Couldn’t fault the set menu and 2 courses for £18. Quality, presentation and taste were spot on, and totally worth the value in my opinion.
We decided to be good and skip dessert, and head off to bed for an early start at breakfast the next morning, and a day at the spa!
The breakfast was a generous serve yourself set up, with everything from your cereals, toasts and croissants, to a hot buffet style with meats, hash browns, beans and eggs etc.
Highlight had to be the serve yourself coffee machine that gave me the creamiest, yummiest latte!
After our bellies had settled, we headed to the spa to indulge in their facilities and also have a little treatment too.
As you can see from the photos, the spa area is kitted out with saunas, steam rooms, a bubbling jacuzzi, hot and cold showers and a huge pool ( I can never take a photo of the pool due to people in them swimming – have to be sensitive to others!).
The jacuzzi was my favourite part. It was so hot and bubbly, I could have relaxed in their all day. Overall, a super clean, modern and friendly spa facility area, with plenty of loungers to lie back and have a relax.
We finished the day with a neck, head and shoulder massage – which was around 30 minutes and acts as an introduction to massage. A perfect day to wind down and relax before setting off on our travels home.
Although saying this, we had a lovely bento box lunch waiting for us after our swim, jacuzzi, sauna, steam room and massage session – what an ideal morning!
You could simply choose what foods you wanted in each four corners of the bento box, which I thought was such a lovely idea! So much better than just limiting yourself to one sandwich or a pasta dish, for example. This was, you could have a mix of salad, sandwiches, cake etc, and have a bit of a nibble of every corner.
The perfect ending to our stay, before jumping in our car, checking out and heading back home.
Thank you Formby Hall – a fantastic stay at your spa hotel amongst the beautiful grounds and close to the beach and national trust areas. A large, spacious room, excellent dining choices, and a relaxed vibe from start to finish.
We’ll be back!
