Beauty: My Skin and Collagen Products

collagen skincare
I wouldn’t want to put myself across as a skincare expert (merely just a fanatic), but I have worked in the beauty and skincare journalism industry for a number of years, and feel I’ve gained a fair amount of knowledge to keep me ‘clued up’. From the countless amount of skincare and beauty products I’ve reviewed, to the masterclasses and workshops I’ve attended, I feel I do know the odd trick or two when it comes to the best practice for skin.

Lets strip it back: we all want to look youthful, right? As women, we will go through our lifetime investing in beauty products which ultimately prevents aging, and gives the effect of younger looking skin. To look dramatically younger or to ‘stop’ the aging process is downright impossible. Everyone knows that. But, from studying certain skincare brands, and even learning about health and diet from various experts, there are certain methods to take and properties to use to care for our skin.

Three powerful beauty ingredients I’ve been studying up on lately are Hyaluronic acid, Retinol, and Collagen. Each one has excellent benefits to the skin, but today I’ll focus on Collagen. Otherwise, I’d be going on all day and you’d possibly be asleep before getting to the end of this blog post!

collagen serum
I’ll try not to go all scientific, but Collagen is one of the most abundant proteins in the body, and it makes up a large part of our skin, hair and nails. Technically it’s a polypeptide, containing a mixture of amino acids which are found in all connective tissue within the body. It’s fantastic for use in beauty products – yet it’s even more effective when taken internally. I’ve taken some collagen shot drinks and capsules before in the past and have noticed a quick improvement in terms of faster growing hair (and stronger!), super clear and healthy nails, and soft supple skin, prone to less breakouts. However, collagen drinks and capsules can be extremely expensive, therefore a good quality collagen face cream/eye cream is the next best thing in my opinion…

I kind of see it like this: collagen is responsible for giving skin elasticity, hair its strength, and connective tissue its ability to hold everything in place. Collagen protein makes up 30% of the total protein in the body, and 70% of the protein in the skin, so it’s a no brainer that our skin needs in. This is why lately I’ve been loving trying out a fantastic, collagen dedicated product – collagen face serum with vitamin a + e .

collagen serum
Collagen Face Serum is a serum which cares for the facial skin, in particularly the delicate skin around the eyes. It’s a gel consistency with a slightly opaque colour and the look of little beads that sit within the gel. The serum has been enriched with valuable Vitamins A & E, which are the ones often used in skincare products purely for their skin benefits. The serum aims to do the following:

  • Rejuvenate skin around eyes
  • Decrease visibility of wrinkles
  • Protect from premature ageing of skin around eyes
  • Care for the very delicate skin around eyes
  • Moisturise, smoothing and firming of the skin with restoration of youthful glow

I’ve been trialing this product for around a month, using it more intensively at night (applying a generous scoop onto the spatula and massaging into my skin and dabbing around my under eyes). For the morning, I have been applying a small amount to the skin, working up slightly around the eyes.

The first thing I noticed was the drastic improvement to my skins moisture. Collagen has a fantastic ability to bind water, thus contributing to proper moisturisation of the skin. I also noticed after two weeks of continued use that my skin appeared much fresher and brighter, which must be down to how Collagen stimulates the process of renovation, deeply regenerating the skin to reveal a more newer looking complexion.

When applying my make-up, which obviously involves lots of patting the skin, I’ve noticed a slight firming effect to my face too. More so around the tops of my cheeks and under eyes. Nothing too dramatic, just a little bit of a firmer feel. The texture also feels a little ‘springier’ – if that makes sense? Like my skin is being slowly plumped from the inside.

I’m always impressed and amazed at how quickly I see the benefits of using collagen products, and this face serum is no different. It’s combination of both vitamin A & E is such an added bonus too. I think I’ll be more than happy to continue using this, especially as I’m turning 30 and need to be more attentive to aging skin… *sighs*
