Ever feel like your hair is a little bit life-less? Getting ready for an evening out and you just want your hair to plump up? If so, then join my club. I spend ages getting ready, only to feel like my hair looks just as flat and bland as it does on an average day going to work! It really doesn’t help that my hair is ultra fine, so if I ever admire a voluminous hairstyle, I may as well kiss goodbye to ever achieving it.
Well, that was kind of until I discovered Dirty Looks hair extensions. I don’t usually wear hair extensions, however if I’m adding a wave to my hair and want a little more ‘oomph’ so to speak, then I usually add a couple of clip-ins and give them a few seconds with the curling tongs. When I do this, I just re-use hair extensions I’ve had for a while. So yep – that means matted, over-worn and dull locks. If you are going to use extensions, then you need to look after them, so I’ve put together a little hair care guide featuring the fantastic Dirty Looks hair extensions which are currently my favourite!
For all of you out there who love to have fabulous hair and interested in using hair extensions, then you may like to take a little look below as I am currently working with Dirty Looks to showcase how to wear them and give a couple of tips. Firstly, when choosing extensions, make sure you really analyse your hair colour and opt for a style with a mixture of shades and a ‘highlighted’ effect if you get more than one shade of blonde or brown put in your hair (or any shade so to speak). I have the HK Full Head Hair Extensions in Parisian Highlighted Wheat Blonde, 16-18 inch. These are by far the best quality extensions I have used in my time, and trust me, I have used a number of brands!
What I loved about these is that when they arrive, you have a little pouch with just one clip of your chosen shade so you can test it against your own hair colour before opening the entire pack. I would advise to always do this – hold the sample clip up against up hair and if the colour doesn’t match, you can return the product before opening up the full head set.
Here are some tips for when you first receive a good set of extensions and to plan your style options:
1. Decide how many strips you want in your hair for your chosen style. The Full Head HK Extensions set from Dirty Looks come in a range of sides, back, and front pieces, all depending on how you wish to wear your hair for the day/evening.
2. Use a brush which doesn’t pull or drag the hair out of the clips and give them a brush through when you first take them out of the pack. I love using the tangle teaser, as this is known for it’s effectiveness with getting through knots and tangles gently. Your hair extensions are always going to get slightly tangled, so ensure you give them a quick run through with your fingers, before using a tangle teaser to work through any matted knots.
3. Use a heat protection spray on your extensions just like you would your real hair – heat causes havoc, so even if you use human hair like the HK range (they are 100% Remy human hair, in ranges of thickness and lengths) you still need to care for them as you would your own. Lightly spray a heat protection spray onto the locks, and lightly skim straighteners or curling tongs over them to blend into your own hairstyle.
The above photo is me with no hair extensions in. Pretty flat and lifeless huh? I may as well add that I had just taken my hair out of a pony tail, and used my fingers to bring it slightly forwards. However, it lacks volume and any kind of ‘life’ in general. You can tell I’ll really un-enthusiastic about my hair can’t you?…
The first way to effectively clip in your set of hair extensions is to clip up the top layers of your hair, and secure your extensions into the underneath layers of your hair. Once you have built up the thickness you want to achieve, unclip the hair you pinned up and let it cover the clips so there is no ‘showing’. There is nothing worse than having hair extension clips peeking through and being a tell-tale!
Decide if you need extra side clips to fill out the front sections, and secure these in last. Gently use a brush or comb and style into place. If the hair extensions are a lot longer than your usual hair length but you only wish to use extensions for thickness, then use a pair of nail scissor and snip away whilst the extensions are in. If you cut these when they are not clipped in your hair, you may get too scissor happy and cut too short, which is a hair extension disaster!
The above shots show my favourite hair extensions from Dirty Looks completely un-styled. This is to show you what these extensions look like completely ‘raw’ – not straightened or waved or curled. Pretty professional aren’t they, even before styling them! I literally just ran my fingers through these and twirled the ends of the locks slightly to blend into my own hair. The colour is a perfect blend, the thickness creates a beautiful texture, and the length gives a natural look without looking too ‘fake’. It’s worth remembering that hair extensions are designed to give your hair that extra glam factor and enhance the look you already have. Try not to make them look too false, by ensuring you pick a great colour match, keep them in the best condition possible using the tips above, and build them up to blend into your own hair.
Another few care and style tips before I sign off – gently wash your extensions and leave to dry naturally/blow dry on very low heat if you feel they need refreshing, go very gentle with the spraying of hair spray, and the vital one – never ever sleep in them!
The above shot shows me and my essential set of hair extensions, complete with ‘the kit’- a tangle teaser and bulldog clip to make sure I’m all set for securing them in place before an evening out…
I recently wore my Dirty Looks HK Full Head extensions with my brand new snakeskin dress from Rare for a very prestigious event. With the right quality hair extensions in place, you can ensure you will always feel a million dollars!
