Over the past 12 or so months, many people have spent a lot of time at home with their partners or trying to make a long-distance relationship work for them. So it is only natural that from time to time, you become complacent with your relationship, and you lose that spark that you once had.
But just because you don’t feel it now, it doesn’t mean it is lost forever. If your relationship is worth saving, then it is worth investing time and energy into bringing back those feelings you once had and creating a loving relationship once again.
How can you bring the spark back into your relationship?
Pay Attention
And not just to the mundane stuff. Avoid the obvious topics of children and work. Instead, talk about things you both enjoy – the kinds of topics you might have discussed when you first started dating. You could talk about movies you’ve seen, mutual friends, hobbies you both enjoy… anything to reconnect.
What makes you think this will work? Because when people get married or are in a long-term relationship, they tend to forget about each other’s day-to-day desires and interests, instead of focusing on the “important” things like money and work. This frequently leads to a disconnect between you, and as you become more like strangers living in the same house, the spark can fade.
Date Nights
This doesn’t always mean you need to book an expensive restaurant, book a babysitter etc., but this is most definitely an option if you wish. Try to carve out some alone time where you can really connect and just tiredly fighting over what film to fall asleep to. Even if you are staying home, dress up, buy some sexy lingerie, make a nice meal and really set the scene.
If you have children, you should also make the most of the free days and nights you didn’t realise you had. Sleepovers, surprise birthday parties, and even playdates at someone else’s house are all excellent opportunities for a date.
Flirt with Each Other
Remember those flirty texts or suggestive comments you used to make early in your relationship, bring them back. have some fun with each and rediscover the connection you have, introducing flirting into your relationship.
A little mutual flirtation can help your marriage by replacing grumpy resentment and the day-to-day grind of family life with playfulness and lightness.
There are numerous ways to flirt with your partner, so choose your favourite! You can leave notes for each other to find, try to look attractive for each other, share secret in-jokes, or tell your partner how attractive you still find them.
If your relationship has deeper issues than simply forgetting to pay attention to each other, then it could be worth looking at therapy to help you work through your problems. However, some things are worth fighting for, and if you want to rediscover the love, it is most definitely worth reigniting that spark in your relationship.
