Firstly, we have to understand the meaning and thought behind the word gift, to help determine what exactly is an ideal gift for someone during the festive season. A gift is used to show someone how much they are respected and loved, or, a gift can be something to make someone feel fetter, boost their confidence or to express love.
So, with Christmas approaching, let’s take a look at one of the most timeless and classic gifts: the watch.
Why is a watch considered to be one the best gift ideas?
Let’s think about men. Men don’t have so many options for accessories, so a good -looking stylish watch is necessary for men. They can’t get by with a pair of earrings or a ring (well they can, but it’s hard to find men who relish wearing jewellery!), therefore a watch steps in perfectly. It’s their ‘wrist candy’.
Saying that, women love a stylish, timeless watch too:
- Firstly, a watch is a type of gift in which the other person reminds you every day.
- Secondly, it is a significant gift, though it is a symbol of time and comes in different colours, brands and variety like a wristwatch (analogue, digital, hybrid, tactile, touch screen), alarm clock, wall clock.
- Thirdly, it is not gender-specific nor age-specific as you can give the watch to anybody like (men, women, girls, boys, kids)
- Fourthly, you can gift a watch on a special occasion, whether it is a birthday, wedding anniversary, Father’s Day, Valentine’s Day etc. It is suitable for gifts across the year, no matter the event or occasion.
- Fifthly, the watch is more than a gadget—people use them as an accessory, for decor, etc etc….

A wristwatch is essential for men who have to attend many meetings daily, because pulling out their phone from the suit in the middle of a meeting is not too subtle. It’s also ideal for those who love fashion, and care about wearing a stylish, sleek item on them everyday.
There are so many types of watches out there. Some men like Swiss Army watches like Victorinox watches, and some love the premium, high-designer names. Some women like luxury watches like Bvglari, and others like funkier, retro styles. The beauty is there are hundreds – sorry millions – of styles of watches, so there is always something that makes the perfect gift.
Tips while buying a watch
• It is advised to set yourself a budget. Watches can be pricey – especially designer ones – so know your gift limit before you buy.
• It’s ideal to buy a watch that can enhance the persons personality and style. Are the quite minimal and ‘clean’ dressed? If so, a chic slim black style with work. Trendy and mis-match? Love bright colours? Go with something more ‘fun’
• Think timeless. It is good to buy a watch that someone can wear at any event or occasion.
• If you can, make sure you can check the quality of the strap while buying.
• Select the watch’s appropriate size because if the watch is too big or too small, it could risk breaking or falling off. Or, if it’s a link watch, you may have to take it to a specialist to get it re-sized which is another expense. Generally, the diameter of the watch should range from 34 mm-50 mm.
Buying a watch for difference occasions
Of course, Christmas tends to me the main ‘event’ for buying a watch for your partner, Dad, Brother, etc etc. However, they make just as great gifts for other occasions too. Birthdays, anniversaries, weddings….
Anniversaries/wedding/birthday
Celebrating someone’s important day has always been a great thing to do, making the occasion with a special gift. So, buying a watch engraved with dates and names is ideal to go that extra mile! It’s a fashionable, keepsake gift. If you can personalise and custom a watch with engravings, this is always a reminder of the good times for the person receiving.
Death
Although not a nice one to consider, gifting someone a watch that belonged to someone else, or a watch similar to the style a loved one had is a beautiful way of passing down a keepsake or memory.
I believe a watch is more than just ‘a standard gift’. Watches have meaning, and they can be as personal and thoughtful as you want them to be. They can lift someone’s style and feel. Plus, wearing a watch implies that you respect the importance of time and according to Benjamin Franklin “Time is money”, so, if you haven’t gifted a loved one a watch yet – what are you waiting for?
