#1: You need to accept your feelings

Your feelings will be all over the place and it’s quite alright. The diagnosis is a big one and you shouldn’t judge yourself for feeling the way you do. It’s okay to feel scared, to feel tongue-tied or feel at a complete loss for anything. You will ride a veritable rollercoaster of various emotions through this time and you should accept this and let yourself ride it. #2: Don’t start to panic

After the diagnosis, you might start to panic. If you start to think of how you’ll die, or what will happen to you during the disease, you’ll give up the fight. Don’t force yourself to feel constantly hopeful, either. Your emotions will stay in turmoil but everything will come back to a balanced state sooner or later. You will regain a sense of peace and hope as you have more time to digest the news.

#3: Don’t shut yourself off

The worst thing you can do is cut yourself off from friends or concerned family members. It can be tempting to lock yourself away after a traumatic diagnosis like this and lick your wounds in private. However, you will only be cutting yourself off from positivity and strength. Let your friends and family reach in to offer a helping hand. You will need their help as you start to fight the disease.

#4: Recognise depression

You might feel yourself sinking into depression after your diagnosis. Don’t attempt to ignore this or sweep it under the rug. Depression is a natural way to feel after having been told that you have cancer. Signs of depression include:

  • Sleeping too much or too little
  • Forgetting things or feeling lost in everyday situations
  • Feeling confused about daily routines
  • Feeling extremely tired and lethargic
  • Extreme weight loss or weight gain
  • Feeling sad and down all the time
  • Having no appetite or not being able to eat anything

If you start to experience these symptoms, you should know you’re not alone. You can get treatment for your depression rather than ignoring it as this will only hurt you more.

#5: Get ready to fight

You’ll need to get into fight mode to beat this disease. Convince yourself that you are going to beat your diagnosis and soon enough, you’ll see this translate into reality.
