There are also numerous activities to do when visiting. Hiking and trekking trails, white water rafting, kayaking and canoeing, as well as diving and snorkelling. There are protected natural parks with amazing wildlife to see. If it’s more of an urban charm you are after then Colombo offers some of the best street food as well as fine dining, shows and music entertainment in this part of the world.
Portuguese, Dutch and British influences still impact the culture here. Colombo is the commercial, economic and cultural centre where its streets are lined with historic buildings inspired by European Colonists and Moorish traders from many centuries ago. It truly is a special place to visit.
Stay in a private villa
Although not a well know holiday spot like Las Vegas, Cancun or Pattaya. It is certainly a more family friendly one. Holiday villas in Sri Lanka are the best way to enjoy a stay with the whole clan. A private pool and barbecue area are available whenever you wish to have a family party. A private chef can be available to cook up a huge dinner to satisfy everyone. Then you can retire to your luxury suite and relax in comfort away from the activities and noise of the rest of the family.
Spice it up!
Sri Lanka is the spice island. A rich culinary history that mixes multiple cultures making a unique and delicious variety of food available to everyone. The diet was influenced by Portuguese, Dutch and British colonists as well as Indian, Arab and Malay traders. This makes for dishes rich in spice and layers of flavours.
Sri Lankan cuisine features primarily coconut, rice, and curries. Many different types of meat are used in a huge variety of dishes. Fish, chicken, beef and mutton are some of the staples here. They are served along with fresh and pickled fruits and a variety of spices. Of course there is always western cuisine of your kids are not as adventurous as you are.
When it’s time to eat, remember to always use your right hand. Sri Lankans use their right fingertips when eating, as the left hand is reserved for use in the WC. Most places do have cutlery though. Eating with their fingers could be quite fun for the kids!
But what’s the price?
A great destination for families as well as anyone coming from a more western country will find the currency exchange rate to be in their favour. A luxury villa, and a fine diner out is very affordable. Prices will go up from December to March when high season begins and the tourists begin to flock.
When getting around, the easiest way is to rent a car and driver. A comfortable car and a friendly driver that knows the area can be the best tool for really experiencing the real life of Sri Lanka.
As for food, there is no shortage of delectable delights like curries and finger foods or “short eats” as the locals call them. Even if the price at the posh resorts is incredibly affordable be sure to venture out and try the local foods. Eat like a local at a street vendor or visit an area less travelled to sample a local restaurant.
Entry to attractions, events and places of interest like national parks and government sites are generally quite high as the expectations are that only foreign tourists visit these sites.
