Training is what everyone believes they need to equip themselves with, including the right skills and knowledge on any sport. Training is a continuous process that builds up skills and knowledge of any athlete over time. To become good at anything, you have to cultivate the habit of doing that particular thing often till you master it and eventually become good at it. Training does not stop once you’ve achieved the “professional” status or you’re considered “good” at any sporting activity, it is the beginning of a continuous process.
This is why we have many top professional athletes that have achieved a lot in their professional careers still reporting for training at every given time required of them.
Training helps the body to gradually build up strength and endurance, improve skill levels and build motivation, ambition, and confidence. Training also allows athletes to gain more knowledge of their sport as well as enabling them to learn about the importance of having a healthy mind and body. Athletes in all types of sports need strength and agility in some specific areas of their body to stand out in their respective sport and perform at their prime level. Routine training helps in conditioning the body and mind to excel through the unique demands for endurance, speed, agility, balance, and recovery required by each wellness activity as well as minimizing injury.
SPORTS TRAINING AND IT’S IMPORTANCE
The process of preparing to achieve the highest level of performance in any sport is simply known as “Sports Training”. The term sports training, on the other hand, is specifically used in the context of athletics, sports, and games which could be a training of athletes, coaches, and teachers. Training is aimed to help sportspeople maintain higher performance capacity in different sports activities; it includes strength in training, corrective and restorative exercises (injury prevention and recovery), conditioning, and cardiovascular training.
It also includes mental and psychological training. Training goes beyond developing the skills and knowledge of a particular sport, to achieve the primary aim of any sports training, the athletes have a balanced mental ability to withstand the rigorous demand that comes with training the body and the mind. The ability to manage stress and anxiety that is associated with different sports needs to be strengthened. Competition in sports makes the participants face diverse situations which require the individuals to be mentally fit.

Sports training can be individual-specific, every individual athletes’ needs for performing in a particular sport can be different from those of another. The difference relies on individual-specific capabilities. It is important to identify the individual potential during the training. By identifying their needs, training may be focused on improving the identified gaps in the abilities of that sports person. Some great athletes with exceptional talents get carried away by their skills and knowledge of the game alone and do not want to develop other key areas of their overall abilities.
A great soccer player, Brazil and Real Madrid legend Ronaldo Nazario reiterate his view on routine team and individual training during one of his interviews published by Italy’s La Gazzetta dello Sport after his retirement. He said, “I’m not saying that our concept of training, of the importance of work, is needless, it’s the complete opposite, but it is certainly different. I trained because I had to do; he does it because he loves it.”
This is a great sportsman who is considered one of the greats, he’s genuinely saying he understands the concept of training and its importance, but he’s only doing it because he had to, and not because it helps him develop his skills and knowledge of the game. Having this type of mindset can be very risky to any other athlete’s career and performance, having the talent is one thing, but maintaining the talent goes a long way in creating a complete sportsman that possesses the necessary attributes. Continuous training is what you need to become a complete sportsman.
Some of the vital benefits of training help all sportspeople to achieve:
- Skill acquisition

Every sporting activity requires observing a certain specific movement/procedure to complete a particular task. This movement procedure is known as technique and when this technique is learned and mastered, it leads to skill development. The performance in any sports generally depends upon the physical fitness of a sports person. Every sports activity needs a specific type of physical fitness.
