As a writer, I’m aware that with every article I write, it’s always on my mind to share supportive, happy advice. However, Christmas can be a really strange, bizarre time for so many of us, and it can feel a little strange and difficult to try to be upbeat. There are so many reasons why people may not be so feeling so ‘pumped’ as the festivities come closer.
Christmas typically bring happiness to most families, with a side of stress and skint-ness of course, but it’s still a magical, loving time of year. I won’t lie, I’m struggling a little this year to get into the festive spirit, and I’m sure it’s a combination of being heavily pregnant and not having the family round this time. Working self-employed, it also takes away all that festive cheer of office parties etc!
This December, it’s just been heavily pregnant me and my partner, waddling around our home! No festive tipples for me and also on a mission to save up for the baby. So I wanted today’s article to be aimed on the ones who like me, who may feel a little sad at the thought of Christmas 2020 being very different, and how to lift spirits and mindset.
It’s so important to openly deal with our feelings if we’re to bring along some joy this year. No matter what uncertainty you may be experiencing, there are a few things to bear in mind that can get us all feeling a little more positive about the holiday season, and the new year that will come…
Embrace your emotions—even if they’re negative
Emotional acceptance is something worth working on, although it can be really hard. We feel can feel negative emotions quite easily, whether it’s coming off a phone call with a friend, hearing sad news about a job, money or family issue this year, or whatever personal events you have going on in your life.

Studies show that you should embrace any negative emotions, and don’t feel ashamed or angry for feeling down. When you notice yourself feeling sad, give yourself 10 minutes to accept the feelings, speak to someone about what’s on your mind (whoever you share a home with, or calling up or WhatsApping a friend). Listen to your favourite playlist, or do something that makes your mind happy – like baking or light exercise.
Do something that personally brings you joy
For me, it’s pretty remarkable how much food can bring me comfort and joy. It’s helped me get through a lot of sad times, although my waistline isn’t looking so great for it!
It doesn’t just have to be food that makes you feel happy or brings joy. There are so many little courses or modes of entertainment online that can spark excitement and keep you busy. Online cooking courses, yoga sessions, even starting up a blog. In terms of games and fun activities, there are so many new online casino games, poker, and even gaming where you can play against people from all over the world.
If you’ve never had time to read, why not look at finishing a good book over the Christmas break. Or if you’re creative, why not attempt to start writing a book over December? There is so much enjoyment that can be found – you just need to figure out what makes you tick.
Make your space festive
I love Christmas decorations, and I grew up so excited about adorning the house with them. This year doesn’t have to be any different – and putting a Christmas touch up around the house is definitely something that made me smile over the weekend when we finally put all the decorations up.
It’s about getting those twinkling lights up to create a cosy glow, and cards from loved ones up on display.

If you can, try to get into the festive mood a little by adding some cosy touches to your home. It can be a Christmas wreath on the door – which you can even make yourself! Placing pines around the home, gingerbread scented diffusers, cinnamon candles, and of course, the tree – the main event! You might not feel about going as big as you usually would which is totally fine, but even a little bit of decor can make a huge difference. Christmas plants are one of my favourite ideas!
Think about good deeds
It’s amazing how doing a good deed has lifted my spirits in the past, so if it’s something you are worried out, perhaps you could try doing a good deed too and seeing how much your spirits are raised?
There are so many people in need during the holidays, that I’ve been putting together charity shop bundles and sending out unused makeup to charities for women – who will benefit from the items much more than I will. Doing good deeds and going beyond can be an impactful way to acknowledge how different this holiday season is, while helping those in need.
Some other ideas include donating to your local food bank or boxes of toys to families who are struggling – all of which are all great places to start. If there are other causes your care deeply about, do some research and find an organisation that you want to support.
Reach out to a professional
Without rounding up on a low, the festive season is difficult for so many people for various different reasons, and people have lots of personal things going on which can contribute to feeling sad or disheartened this year. Loss, loneliness, lack of work…. sometimes talking to someone with the skills to help you can be beneficial.
I know that these tips aren’t a cure for how many of us are feeling right now, but I hope that you can find something here that adds some light to your world. And remember, have the most merry Christmas you can possibly have!
