For those of you who follow me on Instagram, you may have seen that recently I shared a fabulous at-home alternative to heading out to the salon for facials. And by facials, I’m talking about one of my most-loved, trusty treatments: microdermabrasion.
I’ve been investing in microdermabrasion since I was about 20 years old (I’m now 34!) so it’s safe to say these treatments aren’t a new thing for me. However, they can be pricey, but the result of the regular cell renewal is something I have to thank for brightening, smoothing and improving the texture of my skin.
However, we’re not going to salons and clinics the same as we used to, even when lockdown has eased and salons are back open. There’s is a huge surge of interest in at-home beauty treatments, which is why I wanted to share my thoughts on my PMD personal microdermabrasion device.

Feel free to have a watch before you make your mind up about the device, but I was just really shocked at how easy it was to use myself – I thought it was going to be a little difficult or messy!
So the device I have is the Personal Microderm Classic, in a baby pink colour, dubbed as a revolutionary at-home device providing the same brilliant results as professional, in-office microdermabrasion treatments. It comes with different filter heads which can give a variation of results. At the time of this review, I’ve only used the very sensitive and sensitive heads, as I’m working my way up the scale as my skin adjusts.
They work by combining patented spinning disc technology with a perfectly calibrated vacuum suction, which gives that suction feeling the same as a salon microdermabrasion treatment. The main aim is to to leave the skin looking fresh and radiant, and after having weekly treatments using the device, it can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, blemishes and enlarged pores. For me, I have dull skin due to pigmentation and acne marks, so I like to use it to keep on top of this.
Honestly, the process is super simple. You plug the device in, and change the filter to the one you prefer to use. You can test the suction on your arm first, and I kinda feel like it makes that ‘pop’ sound you pull it away from the skin, which is when I’m confident it’s working properly.
They advise to start from the bottom middle of your face, so ideally the jaw close to your chin/mouth, and work upwards in long strokes, which are fairly quick with no dragging or stopping the device mid way on your skin. The device continues to give the vacuum suction, so you have to be careful about keeping it moving at all times.
The feeling of the skin cells being ‘sucked’ up and renewed feels amazing to me! I don’t know if it’s just because I’ve had various great results from microdermabrasion treatments myself over the years, but when I feel that suction, I look forward to feeling my skin afterwards. Each time, it;s silky smooth and feels beautifully soft. When I look in the mirror, it tends to look brighter as the old skin cells get shedded. It doesn’t happen after just one go (the texture/feeling does though!) – I would say after around 3 sessions, I start to notice visibly brighter, clearer and more radiant skin.
The device costs £145, so if you think that an actual microdermabrasion treatment at a salon costs around £40 (depending where you go of course, I’ve had some on offer for £25 before, but have paid up to £50 to have one followed by a calming mask and extraction), you get your return on investment pretty quickly here.
It’s convenient, super easy (as I keep stressing!) and the onlu thing to keep on top of is replacing the filter heads after a while, which you can purchase at PMD.
In a world where at-home skincare devices are becoming more popular, this is one I feel would suit the majority of skincare enthusiasts. A deep exfoliation and renewal of skin cells helps the skin to look more youthful, and it can also help with this such as uneven skintone, rough textures, and even areas of clogged pores and blackheads.
