There’s A New Girl In Town…

… and she’s called The Recessionista. Beware of this girl. She has a keen eye for style and an even sharper eye for a bargain. She can be found hiding amongst the rails of sales and outlet stores, and she will not return home until she has found an item of clothing for £1…

And she’s not on her own! Women are flocking to join the well-dressed ranks of recessionista’s. This growing group consists of women who are determined not to give up their shopping addictions whilst we hit hard financial times. A study has shown that cheap is finally accepted as chic, with over a third of women shunning designer labels and turning to buying cut-price clothes from bargain basement offers and outlet stores.

The summer sales, which has led to High Street retailers offering up to a whopping 70% of clothes, has attracted the recessionista’s and fuelled them to snap up more fashion bargains this year than previous summers. Primark has recently followed the success of Matalan, with a report showing they have an increase in sales of 17%.

Gone are the days when money was no object for women to look good, as a survey questioning 700 women proved that over half of women would not spend over £200 on a single outfit. Ebay has also never been so successful, with shoppers aiming to grab bargains for 99p each time they log onto the bidding website for a new wardrobe addition. Even cheap chain store Poundland is rolling in the pounds. No pun intended (I could have said it’s quids in…).

The rise of the Recessionista’s has become a trend of its own.  It is now an accepted way to live and shop, as the recession has forced us all to become aware of the way we spend our money. Ok so we may be slowly coming out of the recession, but this new type of shopper is becoming widely known. Women love a bargain, but also look for clothes that can become ‘classics’, as we don’t have the same disposable money that we used to have. So this means women will shop for clothes now and can hold on to them for up to 10 years.

Does this sound like you? Are you a living, breathing recessionista? I have to admit, I have shifted slightly to that side. Every time my outfits complimented, my reply is always “Oh it’s H&M’s finest”. Honest I’m like a broken record…

My recessionista outfits of the week have to be from the mighty Primark. Cheap and cheerful as always. These outfits launch in stores soon therefore prices aren’t confirmed, but I’m guessing £15 tops for any of these little delights.

Love your blog! Nice to know that there’s a Recessionista across the pond! I spent some time in London and desperately miss the fashion deals… guess NYC will have to do 🙂

Here in Canada, I think we are slightly behind you as far as deals & sales go…there is a general reluctance to admit something was on sale still. That said, I run an online clothing swap for women (way more popular in Europe, I am told) and am slowly seeing the shift to excitement at getting a great bargain (nothing is quite better than free!) My group is on facebook at suzieswapper if you’d like to check it out!
