Lifestyle: Top 10 Ways To Spring Clean Your Life

Actual spring cleaning is one thing I don’t like very much at all. On the other hand, spring cleaning my life by making little seasonal plans and changes is one thing I do enjoy very much.

So as we are mid way through March, and April is only a hop, skip and a jump away, I wanted to get you in the mood for Spring and encourage some inspiration for small ways to make your Spring seem brighter and more enjoyable.

1. Start the day the lemon way

It may not taste as good as a full fat latte, or give you the same jump-out-of-bed kick as an espresso, but starting the day with hot water and a slice of lemon is a really healthy way to begin the morning. It doesn’t taste bad (it could be worse!), it gives you a high dose of vitamin C, has skin clearing and detox properties, flushes out your system, a great source citric acid, potassium, calcium, phosphorus and magnesium, reduces inflammation…. the positives are endless.

You don’t have to do anything drastic – feel free to have a coffee when you get to work – but aim to kick start your day with this healthy drink.

2. Incorporate more Superfoods into your diet

I know I seem to be on a healthy eating missing lately and it can be ridiculously boring if your not into it yourself. So I won’t lecture, bore you, or dictate what foods you should be eating. I ate two cakes yesterday so I’m in no position to tell anyone anything! But perhaps for the start of Spring, make a mental note to try and incorporate more sweet potato, spinach and kale into your diet.

Not everyday if you don’t wish, but a couple of times a week. A sweet potato baked with your favourite filling is a great lunch idea, as is making kale crisps or a spinach smoothie just a few extra times during the week to ensure your diet is reflecting the new healthier, happier season.

3. Organise Afternoon Tea with your loved ones

Pick an upcoming month in Spring, and book in for afternoon tea with your Mum, Sister, or a close group of friends. Family time doesn’t happen enough, and soon after the Christmas celebrations and family visits take place, it’s easy to let quality family time slip for another year. Make an effort to put some time aside this Spring season and gather together a group of ladies in your life, whether it is just a mother-sister -auntie event or your yourself and your best friend, and dedicate it to catching up about your lives, families, work, and everything that’s nice to talk about with those closest who care.

A cheaper version is to head to a place known for selling the best cakes, and get a ‘cake-away’ – you know, an amazing cake to take-away. I recently did this with Slattery’s in Bury (North Manchester), hence the yummy photo of this Blueberry Cream Muffin I purchased!

4. Book in for a Microdermabrasion, or another exfoliating treatment

The change in the weather means you should change your beauty products accordingly. This doesn’t mean go all out and buy new products, but perhaps make small colour changes – you may need a darker foundation, a paler pink lipstick, or a fresher peach blush to update your look. Ideally, book in for a microdermabrasion or an intense exfoliation treatment to prep your skin for the warmer weather and sunshine.

It’s the perfect way to rid your skin of dull cells, promoting a smoother and radiant complexion. A deep exfoliation will also encourage your beauty products to work better.

5. Arrange a Saturday for a Spring Clean-Out

This means dedicating a Saturday afternoon (or a weekday if you have to work weekends) where you do nothing but ‘clear out’. Yes it’s boring as hell, but stick at it for the full day, and create three different areas; charity shop, throw away, keep.

Be ruthless and make sure every room you are clearing out, every closet and every storage cupboard gets assessed to this strict regime. As you are sorting out and clearing up, clean up too. By the time your day is over, you’ll be absolutely shattered but you won’t have to do a clean out to this extent for a long time to come. Your house will look clean and fresh, and you will all of a sudden feel magically de-cluttered.

Any unused items, either give it to charity or sell on. And maybe even sell your old iPhone, tablet or other more tech to an online retailer

6. Book train tickets and visit a friend you never saw all Autumn and Winter

You know that friend who lives in another city who every year you say “Yeah I’ll come and see you soon”? Well book tickets and go and see them. Arrange a weekend that is 6 weeks in the future from now, book your travel so tickets are at the cheapest price, and make it in your diary as a definite plan. It will give you something to look forward to, you’ll enjoy catching up, you’ll explore another city and feel really good for seeing an old friend.

7. Go for a one day Spring/Summer wardrobe shopping day

If done correctly, you only need to do this once! Make a list of the Spring essentials you need in your wardrobe and a reasonable budget, and stick to it. If you need any help, buy a glossy fashion magazine like Elle or Instyle and circle the essentials that you fall in love with, but don’t go overboard.

It’s a ‘Spring Clean’ – therefore updating your frumpy jumpers and coats for sheer blouses and jackets, your jeans and pencil skirts for floaty midi skirts and culottes, and your chunky knit dresses for loose fitting jumpsuits and cute dresses. Think of clean, Summer colour palettes and feminine styles.

8. Change your bedding, cushion covers or curtains

Invest in a lighter material, pastel hue coloured bedding set, cushion set, or pair of curtains. Just by updating your current one’s to a Spring style will instantly give your house that new season face lift. The nice new change will play on your mood too, and you’ll feel instantly happier when you step into your abode.

9. Move your body

Yes! This one is great for the Spring – no sluggish excuses like the one’s you can pull out in the Winter. If you messed up by not joining a gym for New Year, or never put your exercise plan into action, now is the time to do it. With lighter evenings and a warmer evening air, it’s the best time to go for a run after work or attend gym classes.

If you still can’t face it, then watch YouTube fitness videos at home and workout in your bedroom. The motivation of having a fitter Summer body is enough to help you achieve your Summer fitness goals.

10. Make a seasonal ‘goal plan’

And speaking of goals, a season change is the ideal time to make some new goals! Did you promise yourself in January that you would loose a stone and a half by May? Did you tell yourself to take up a new hobby, save a certain amount of money, or learn a new skill?

OK so you failed – but why not draw up the list again and set some more reasonable goals this time. They can be little things to achieve throughout the Summer, such as aim to grow your hair 3 inches longer by the time Summer is over, put £10 away per week in a piggy box you have to smash to open, or look into courses that have a September enrolment date and book in for an opening evening. Just the littlest of goals are a great thing to do to spring clean your season change!
