It’s been a long while since I’ve given myself the pleasure of going out for brunch. Everyone loves brunch, don’t they? And more so, everyone loves making a social occasion out of ‘brunching’. It’s that amazing food gap between breakfast and lunch, when you want more than a bowl of porridge, but something more breakfast themed than a filled baguette.
On Sunday just gone, myself and a few friends headed to The Yard in Alderley Edge, Cheshire, to have a much-needed catch up and to indulge in some hearty food. From time to time I venture out to Cheshire, but it’s been such a long time since I’ve eaten there. But I never forget just how lovely it is round there.
Driving through Cheshire to get to Alderley Edge and passing what I like to call ‘Millionaires Mansion Row’ blows me away every time. My head is literally on a swivel. House goals, right there. And life goals whilst we’re at it.
The Yard is more than just a place to turn up to and indulge in the menu. It’s a cultural and wellness lifestyle brand too, and you can spot this as soon as you turn up to this quaint building with lots of handwritten information on the windows. It has a retail section, where you can browse and purchase the most beautiful scented candles, it runs events (such as workshops or general entertainment) and hosts retreats.
They also offer Yoga, Pilates, Meditation and Spiritual classes, which I’d absolutely love to attend at some point.
The interior is cosy yet clean and minimal, with a touch of vintage class thrown in too. With low hanging light bulbs, rustic wooden tables and quirky wall fixtures, this place is truly unique.
Upon arrival I opted for my usual – green tea. I’m a hardcore green tea drinker, if I say so myself, and this particular order came presented in a strong black teapot, perhaps made from iron? I’m not too sure, but it sure had a weight to it and kept my tea piping hot.
The menu was refreshing, as it purely focuses on healthy, nutritious meals, so there was no temptation for something fatty or sweet. I’m a sucker for opting for something naughty when I eat out, but there was no chance of this happening at The Yard.
From coconut porridge and smashed avocado on toast, to eggs benedict and their nutritional breakfast, I was in my element. All the goodness! Funnily enough, all four of us opted for the nutritional breakfast, in which I chose the smoked mackerel option, purely because I love mackerel and rarely treat myself to this fish.
The breakfast came with rye bread (you could switch this up if you like, but I’m a firm lover of rye), smashed avocado, poached eggs, salad, berries, pine nuts, pumpkin and chia seeds, kefir and sauerkraut (a bit like a picked salad). It was absolutely delicious, and I couldn’t fault it at all. Maybe I wanted more of it…. maybe the portion was too small for my and my hungry belly. But either way, 10/10! The peppered mackerel was the nicest addition and it’s made me realise I need more of that good stuff in my life…
The Yard typically offers an extensive list of smoothies and fruit juices for those who want their extra vitamin boosts, but I was also happy to spy a soya matcha latte on the menu too. You don’t find them in a lot of places, so it’s always good to spot. Next time I think I might move away from my usual green tea and try this one out…
A reasonably priced place for breakfast, brunch or lunch, costing around £6-£12 for a meal depending on how big you wish to go. The Yard has a relaxed, calm ambiance and laid-back feel. Which is just what we all need on a Sunday morning…
